Default P-51 Mustang with rare cammo

The link below brings some photos of a P-51 Mustang applied with an experimental paint scheme. Does anyone know the name or if this cammo was used operationally?

It looks like an Allison powered F6 photo recon model with 20mm cannon.

Allison, yes. Recce: no. There are no camera ports on the fuselage.

It is an early Mustang I (RAF spec) because it has four Hispano 20mm cannons.

I've never seen these pics before....very interesting.

T-38,

Where were the photo ports located on the fuselage of the rece Mustang?

Aft-fuselage, I think only on the left side. Two circular ports; about 6 inches in diameter.

They were low on the fuselage; just forward of the tailwheel.

Found a pic: http://www.air-and-space.com/1946062...20crop%20l.jpg

The paint scheme is known as "razzle dazzle" It was used quite often during WWI for ships. The USN continued its use in WWII primarily in the Atlantic Theatre, and the British Royal Navy also used it in WWII. Both sides put it on airplanes in WWII, but radar and other advances in technology combined with the high maintenance required to maintain the paint made it less useful on aircraft.

It looks like this Mustang was repo'd by the US, and if the history below the photobucket link is correct, this airplane eventually was converted into a recce bird.

Obviously, a "razzle dazzle" paint scheme didn't make a ship harder to see, but what it did do was interfere with optical calculations of a target's range and speed. Many were sunk anyway, and it was never clearly proven if the paint did much good.

I see your razzle dazzle and raise you a "Yehudi"

Another interesting way of concealing things from the naked eye that was rendered useless by radar.

I always wanted a big light bar across the top of my truck and a personalized plate that said YEHUDI. Maybe I would have had time to slow down after my radar detector got zapped by the new instant on radar guns before the cop could actually see me as I topped the hill he was hiding at the bottom of, if I had the big light show of yehudi going on.

Maybe. But if the cop's radar was like the radar on a PAR (doubtful) he would see you. Running PARs the only plane we would get two targets on were C141s and C5s. IOW in addition to the raw target of the fuselage we would pick up the tail on those two planes, the second return slightly behind and above the main return.
