I had meet a P-47 pilot in a walmart or something one day. He told me something similar to yours, and that "when you run out of thunderbolts, you run out of fighters. when you run out of glycol, you run out of mustangs." I have to admit that the corsair is my second favorite.

I agree, most beautiful ever, although my father, a Naval Aviator during that time period preferred the FM-2, he said the F4U was always trying to kill you.

There's a guy at my church who flew Corsairs out of Rabaul in WWII. Every time we see each other we spend at least an hour swapping lies. What a great bunch of stories he has to tell...

Beautiful plane!! The legacy flyby at the memphis airshow by the corsair and F/A-18 was one of the coolest flyby's I've seen!

I always appreciated the P-51 myself...

And as a bomber guy, I also like the B-17 that the P-51 protected:

How bout the Lockheed Constellation (Connie)? Now that's a beautiful machine from the airline world.

You once met a F4U pilot. Major Ed. Remember him? Used to stop by from time to time. He passed away about 6 weeks ago. He was flying his C170 till the end.
