Anan Creek - Bear Watching
We chartered the float Beaver from Ketchican to Anan creek. As a land based guy I was quite alarmed and fighting back yelling GO AROUND as the pilot landed about 500 yards out pointed directly at shore but we quickly stopped. A short hike to the national park. We were allotted 15 minutes to work our way down to a blind on the waters edge, before the next group had their chance.
The bears were on the other side of the creek - about 50 feet away. It was buffet time. The salmon were so plentiful, it was dip a claw, pull out a salmon, one bite from the brain, one bite from the belly and toss it away. That's were all the tasty, fatty stuff is. Two cubs also were about as well.
I have some other photos of our trip from Talkeetna (get the cheese cake from Michelle's Cafe!) to Mt. McKinley in a Cessna 185. We got to about 12-13K, still 7K from the summit. The photos don't do the mountain justice so I won't post. But here's another from Anan creek. Pretty amazing stuff.
