I think that the first chance I get to do a trip up to Alaska I'm going to jump on it!

Default Anan Creek - Bear Watching

We chartered the float Beaver from Ketchican to Anan creek. As a land based guy I was quite alarmed and fighting back yelling GO AROUND as the pilot landed about 500 yards out pointed directly at shore but we quickly stopped. A short hike to the national park. We were allotted 15 minutes to work our way down to a blind on the waters edge, before the next group had their chance.

The bears were on the other side of the creek - about 50 feet away. It was buffet time. The salmon were so plentiful, it was dip a claw, pull out a salmon, one bite from the brain, one bite from the belly and toss it away. That's were all the tasty, fatty stuff is. Two cubs also were about as well.

I have some other photos of our trip from Talkeetna (get the cheese cake from Michelle's Cafe!) to Mt. McKinley in a Cessna 185. We got to about 12-13K, still 7K from the summit. The photos don't do the mountain justice so I won't post. But here's another from Anan creek. Pretty amazing stuff.

Back in 2007 my wife worked for Rust's Flying Service and as a perk I got to go on a Mt. McKinley flight. Simply the most amazing flight, the only draw back is that when you fly right up to the mountain its physically impossible to take enough of the mountain in with a single photograph.
