Default Fun U-2 Dragon Lady Video

Turn the speakers up (as long as the kids aren't around) and enjoy some attempts at landing the notoriously hard to land U-2 Dragon Lady.

That does not look like a fun time.

How slow do they touch down and what is the crosswind limitation?

It's a tail dragger and loves to ground loop. Few USAF pilots have ever flow a tail dragger.

On the serious side the statistics are not pretty. One Lockheed test pilot, four CIA pilots, seventeen USAF pilots, one Royal Air Force Pilot, and eleven Chinese (ROCAF) pilots have been killed in U-2 accidents (34 total) Only one (US) was due to combat - Rudy Anderson shot down over Cuba. Four ROCAF pilots were killed in combat.

Of the original 55 U-2A models, forty-three were destroyed and the remaining twelve were involved in major accidents. Some have been restored and placed in museums.

Huggy or Razor - please update my numbers. Thanks.

Approach speed is 90 knots and then cross the fence at 70 plus an additive based on weight. The goal is to cross the threshold at 10 feet on speed, bring it down to one to two feet and hold it there on center line with no crab or drift until it stalls landing tailwheel first. To do that you have to get the yoke all the way back into your gut as the stall breaks. And remember to keep the wings level throughout or else the jet is going somewhere you don't want it to go.

It's a good challenge that keeps you on your toes. Lots of good stick and rudder stuff. I flew it for 9 years and really enjoyed my time in the program. Great jet with a good mission.

Xwind limit is a typical 15 knots.

No update from me but Huggy keeps better track of the history than me. Bleak numbers to be sure though.

A typical cocky rooski pilot would say: "they should have put a drag shut on that thing. It would've fixed a lot of problems! Amatures!"

Great video, thanks for sharing!
