Default Big Turbofan Sucking THIN air

A long time ago (1968) in a different galaxy (well almost) we were flying above the "published" world "level flight altitude" record on a daily basis. Our friends in the U-2Rs were doing the same. That TF33 is burning less than a 1000 lbs per hr at altitude.

It's a RB-57F with a 122 foot wingspan.

YouTube - General Dynamics RB-57F Canberra

Warning - video is not a modern HD well polished budget justifying production. Hit "pause" at two minutes, five seconds and look at the wings.

Nice...You gotta love it that the two big-ass fans just weren't quiet enough so they bolted a couple more smaller ones on for the "critical" times.

No starter. Air started at about 40,000, they went to full power (Electric ON/OFF fuel control). Gave us about 3,000 foot higher altitude. Also "detachable" for max range missions instead of max altitude missions. NASA rarely uses them on their "Fs." Note nuclear sampling "scoop" on fuselage. Filters were in wing pods.

It was a dull left handed pencil that accompanied a sextant, driftmeter, E6B, and a TACAN that didn't work most of the places we flew. Imagine navigating from Mendoza Argentina or American Samoa to French Polonesia (Nuclear testing) and return (over the Pacific Ocean) before the days of GPS, Computers and electronic calculators.

I was lucky - had a back seater to do the work. The U-2 guys had to do it all by themselves.

Please note the continuation of these high tech writing devices (including left and right handed ones) in the new U-2 cockpit.
