It was a dull left handed pencil that accompanied a sextant, driftmeter, E6B, and a TACAN that didn't work most of the places we flew. Imagine navigating from Mendoza Argentina or American Samoa to French Polonesia (Nuclear testing) and return (over the Pacific Ocean) before the days of GPS, Computers and electronic calculators.
I was lucky - had a back seater to do the work. The U-2 guys had to do it all by themselves.
Please note the continuation of these high tech writing devices (including left and right handed ones) in the new U-2 cockpit.

What happens if you break the point off at 70 000 ft, is there a sharpener onboard?
Great pic of the new cockpit by the way.

Are the left and right handed writing devices interchangeable?
yes. They can be exchanged for each other.

The question assumes they are sharpened and being used - which I doubt.
