I also shoot with a D40, how did you get a 4 min exposure? I though the longest was 30 secs or a min.

You shoot in Bulb. In Manual mode, once you exceed shutter speed of 30" your display will read "Bulb" which holds the shutter open for as long as you are depressing the shutter release. Best to have a remote/cable release for this.

AZFlyer answered your question but I'll give you a little more info.

ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control (Infrared) from Nikon Use that little guy in Bulb mode and all you have to do is press it to open the shutter and then to close the shutter.
