I don’t know exactly how he made the calculation, but thought it was interesting.

He must be consulting on a UPS pilot's divorce case this week. I think he's a useless hack.

I think calculating career earnings off of 35 years in the job is wildly unrealistic. What percentage of the seniority list at any of the legacy carriers, FedEx, and UPS were hired by 30 years old. At Brown our new hires will be lucky to get 20 solid years in. Also, going off current contracts should and a 35 year career should stack the deck in favor of the legacies and 18% DC. Time value of money will be really kicking in that last five years and our pension is capped at 30 years.

That said, I do think the long term personal financial impacts of contract differences (pension & B plan vs bigger B plan, single pay band vs multiple pay bands, work rules, etc.) is both interesting to inform contract improvements and career planning for new guys.

Direct link? I can't find that on Darby's website, though many of the assumptions are listed in OP.

My APC skills fall short of figuring out how to post the spreadsheet and bar graphs he has posted there.

Definitely some interesting assumptions. I’m assuming this is targeting future applicants. Several huge assumptions that give this almost zero validity including upgrade times, age of new hires, no profit sharing, and a pretty conservative 5% return on 401k. According to Mr. Darbys website he is an expert witness. That means he will argue either side of an issue for whoever pays first. Wouldn’t be surprised if this article was presented during our negotiations.

Wouldn't be surprised if this article was *created for* our negotiations, "interesting" assumptions and all. "Look at these greedy, underworked, overpaid pilots! Top of the pile, and they dare ask for MORE!"
