Which will eventually create a total of 140 TBD positions for newhires, on top of the 170 positions for newhires created by the previous vacancy bid.

So almost 10% growth of the crew force. That ain’t that bad. Now we just need a new fleet and a new contract. I also could use a new flying unicorn to seek my rainbow. Things are definitely improving over earlier this year.

All sarcasm aside, this place remains a good deal if you can find a comfortable niche that minimizes the painful bits and maximizes the positive bits. If I were to be a career commuter, my bidding would look very different and a legacy would likely look much better.
I'm one of those that found my comfortable niche. I like night flying in Asia because it allows me to keep my body clock on East Coast Time. I happen to think the catering in most of the Asian gateways is pretty good (I highly recommend the Thai curry chicken in Bangkok and tandoori chicken in Delhi) And there are plenty of good local food options near the hotels if you are a foodie like me. This job doesn't have to suck. Sometimes I feel like I'm on paid vacation when I go to work. And no I don't drink kool aid.

Yes, Z is something special indeed. For a lot of their trips (Europe or Asia) you can stay on US day body clock. Downside is you’re up at night on layovers, not a lot to do at 1-6am and the trips are often 2 weeks which I find to be a bit too long though the resulting 2 weeks off is great. I have been the least tired coming home from trips than any other fleet I’ve been on. I also like being able to stay domestic for a bid period here and there vs always going intl (ie. Whale flying).

Also note that we have been hiring guys and gals who are older, early 40’s being the average age I believe. A lot of them don’t have the luxury of punching out early, being in income catchup mode. IMHO, The actual retirements will begin to skew towards the mandatory #s as time goes on vs 62.5 or whatever it is now.

I can show you examples where we do make more for less work, with little (body clock) night flying as compared to the legacies. I can do the same for Legacy shops as well, mostly depends on your F,S,D and seniority (timing) but there are good niches and bad niches at any outfit you look at. Pros and cons. I’ve been trying to focus on what is good here and enjoying it vs staring at the greener grass and second guessing my decisions.

Why? This place is about as commuter friendly as it gets: contract provisions create commuter friendly lines, lots of CMLs and DH’s to deviate, browntails are essentially a guaranteed ride, can often jump right into trips, use miles from CMLs to buy tix when needed. Worst case you JS or non rev on the pax side or buy a ticket.

Some of those legacy commuter clauses seem tasty but not always the cats ahzz they appear to be: legacy neighbor who flies intl trips (late afternoon departures) has to catch the 6am flight out of our local regional airport so he has “2 viable options,” to get to work. My equivalent would be catching a 1pm brown tail.

In truth, whether UPS or a pax carrier is better for your commute, all depends on where you live and where you commute from. But UPS holds its own in most cases.

I was mostly trying to make a joke. Sprinkled with a little truth. I will say working for UPS is a unique experience nothing like anyplace else I’ve ever worked.

Spot on post. Senior Z especially FO is a tough job to beat.
