Default China backup plans?

Is there a backup plan if (when?) the company temporarily suspends all flights to and from China? Could Clark handle our return if needed? Haven’t been there in years so I’m not sure how much of a footprint we have there nowadays?

As always, media likes to hype everything BUT now that CDC issued a warning against all nonessential travel to China, ups and fdx might not have a whole lot options available to them?

Thoughts?

US CDC warns against all nonessential travel to China over coronavirus

By Helen Regan, Steve George and Adam Renton, CNN
Updated 1:02 a.m. ET, January 28, 2020
  • Rising toll: 106 people are dead and more than 4,515 cases have been confirmed in mainland China, as the Wuhan coronavirus continues to spread throughout Asia and the rest of the world.
  • China on lockdown: Nearly 60 million people have been affected by partial or full lockdowns in Chinese cities as the country's government steps up its response.
  • Global spread: There are 62 confirmed cases in 17 places outside of mainland China, including at least five in the United States.
  • Travel advisories: The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised its travel precautions for China to its highest of three levels: "Warning."
  • Investigating transmission: People can spread the virus before symptoms show, China's health minister said Sunday, but US experts say there is no clear evidence this is happening.

I think the company will call our travel essential. If we are lucky they might throw in some face masks.

Ironically we already get free face masks for the top-of-D disinfection bug spray.

Anyways, I doubt we’ll see any additional face masks. The FAA will grant us a Cargo Face Mask Exemption. Then we’ll eliminate any risk of an infection with a perfectly drafted and grammatically correct Corona-Virus Mitigation must-read-bulletin. We’re perfectly safe. :-/

Thankfully the union forced the issue. Management couldn’t care less as long as the boxes move.

IPA Achieves China Agreement
Following a marathon bargaining session stretching late into the night, the IPA has reached an agreement with UPS related to China flying during the coronavirus international public health crisis.
(...)provisions of the new agreement (...) will make all crewmember flying to mainland China strictly voluntary during the emergency.

I see the boxes continuing to move. It will be more about money than personal health and safety.

Always about money and politics IMHO.
IPA pilot can choose, that is the win. Not aware of some of our peer cargo pilots getting a choice yet. UPS can use FQS to move volume and suspect they will heavily.

I’m very glad we got this agreement!
I was worried we’d have guys/gals refusing trips and the company using that as an excuse to outsource China flying to other companies. I mean, how many years has it been now since IPA pilots flew to Tel Aviv and to Ankara?? Will we EVER get those cities back? Personally I doubt it. :-(

Default Alarming

Coronavirus death toll now exceeds SARS, 811 victims and over 37,000 confirmed cases in China slone!
Let's pray because not online is this going to further affect e-commerce and our line of work, but it is a real hazard to each and every one of us. Hopefully it stays mostly contained in China.
Hella.

Why would you want those cities back? Why not add Kandahar, Aleppo and Bagdad? Doctors have stated the Flu is more dangerous than Coronavirus. Media is driven from profit, remember that.
