Congrats and welcome. When I was initially hired I commuted from CMH to EWR. I did not enjoy it, and I would not recommend it. The ORD-CMH commute is a "better commute," and I did that briefly before moving to a Chicago suburb.

If you can't move to a base, I think the next best thing would be driving distance. That being said, 4 hours is a good haul on both ends of a trip. Consider getting a little closer if you can (South bend, northern Indiana, etc.). I liked living in Ohio, but we found a great suburb of Chicago that offers everything we need.

In my opinion, commuting to work is a huge waste of time and energy. I also understand moving isn't an option for a lot of people. If you have to do it, United has a great commuter policy. Good luck with your decision!

Will Cleveland ever be an option (like years down the line)? I thought it was gone as a domicile but it is still listed as one.

It's still a domicile for the 737 (quite senior). But I wouldn't count on it still being one in 5 years. I don't think anyone on the property would be even remotely surprised if they close it.

The best option is to move to base. Maybe if you want to stay close to Ohio move to somewhere within 2 hours drive of EWR or ORD rather than going to IAH, or LAX/SFO etc. Obviously everyone has different things going on in their life which means that might not be an option, but if you can I would highly recommend it.

Then if you are on reserve and don't get called you're already at home. Or if you finish a trip you're 2 hours drive from home. No fighting to get a jumpseat in your own car.

This statement can be misleading to pilots contemplating commuting. "Hang out at Starbucks halfway there, great idea, I can do that..." until they learn SC is a 14hour block. Or they begin SC at 0100.

It's still a crew base. Depending on who you talk to it's because there were too many other irons in the fire to worry about it, or closing it would give 200 pilots expensive positive space travel to their new base, or via an agreement with the city UAL is required to have a presence there until 2019 (if so it's likely to close late next year), or because it has substantial maintenance facilities and crews are needed to get planes in and out so the cost savings of having crews there is of some benefit. If we ever buy a fleet of smaller planes it might be a good place to put some. UAL pays $1 million per month through 2025 for the shuttered D terminal which used to have the RJs but the gates were built to handle 737s if desired.

If it takes them longer than 90 days to train you then you can displace to anywhere your seniority will hold. That won't be CLE because it's so senior but it may be a player elsewhere.

A four hour drive is doable. It is not fun. And on reserve it downright bleeps. Starbucks for 14 hours. Done that. At 1 am. Then released from short call to be placed on short call the next morning, so you get a hotel, because driving home is too far to get adequate rest before you're back on duty, halfway to the hub. Then sit in Starbucks for another 14 hours. Barnes & Noble the next day. A couple movies the next day. IKEA. A random mall.

Its much better as a lineholder. You have a place to be and a time to be there. It makes for a long day. But other than day 1 & day 4 its just the same as living in base.

How often can they short call you a month? My buddy on reserve just picks up flights the day beforehand (aggressive pickup he calls it). I'm trying to figure out how many days I will be away from home while on reserve. I am thinking at least 18..Right? Since you get paid 4 hours a day when on reserve what's the advantage of trying to pick up trips the day prior? My buddy does it for the money but I only care about least amount of days worked (getting military retirement check). He also avoids the crash pad expense but I plan on just getting a place near base and hanging out if I have to. No real need to respond, I have months to figure it out actually.
Thanks again
