Default Reserve reassignment ?

All,
On a reserve call out from denver. 3 day I.D. With a deadhead back to Denver on third day(2-4 Feb) On day 2, today at 6:30 am crew desk reassigns me. They do a one day turn add on for day 3,
4 Feb(instead of deadheading home) spend the night at ORD, then deadhead home on day 4(5Feb)

My questions please.
1. In ORD bid package the one day I'm flying shows as a stand alone 1 day I.D. Shouldn't this trip be in open time if it was open or even if someone called in sick. We are at 6:30am when the assignment was given(3 feb)the day prior for 4 feb, 9:25am show.

You answered the phone?? On a layover, just don't do it.

Yes, it should have been in open time. It may have been in open time in ORD, did you check? If it was last minute, the crew desk gets creative. If they can't fill it in domicile, that's when they start with alternative solutions. Outsource it to other bases, in this case, DEN with DH on both ends, or in your case, reassign.

Reassignments are under different rules. They can reassign you in less time than it is required to be available in open time, and more often than not, it is shorter time than they can get a legal reserve. Another way around that is the senior manning. There are no rules on senior manning report times.

However it sucks, it sounds like it may have been legal. More transparency is what we need in the staffing area of the contract. We don't have that anymore. Next contract....maybe....

1. No phone call.
2. I.D. Assigned at 6:30 am, 27 hours prior to report so no urgency or 15 hours prior.

The bad news is that you are considered a visiting reserve. One of the dumber items in the contract. 20-H-7. As a visiting reserve you are Step 1 when assigning open parings (20-I-4).

The good news is that it looks as if the trip was assigned without being open for four hours and not in the assignment window (11am the day prior). I'm guessing there might be another provision covering your scenario or scheduling is making it up on the fly.

Please file a PDR for an accurate response.

1. PDR Filed. And yes 20-I-4 would apply but 20-I-1 says the trip is not assignable until 1300, thus it should be put in open time. Now the part you can't make up.

I called the crew desk and they threw out what you said. I said the trip needed to be in open time both for a line holder and a local reserve to pick up. I quoted the contract(20-I-1).After being put on hold for almost 15 min, a walk from terminal B-C and a walk around she came back. She said,

"The pairing was in open time(I never looked because it was another domicile)and then we pulled it from open time. Once we pull it, it belongs to us(the company) and we can do with it as we please."

I said where's the reference for that. You can call a trip whatever u want, but when it comes open prior to 11 am the previous day, it stays in open time. A one day 8 hour trip one day prior to the super bowl...... it would've been picked up in a heart beat by either a line holder or reserve. I've never heard of the crew desk having the power to cancel a pairing and then saying we own it and can do with it as we please. Short notice yes, but not this far in advance.

If they were so sure of themselves, they wouldn't have put me on hold for 15 min to come up with that excuse. And the kicker to all this, the other pilot flying with me had the exact same thing happen only a different ID. VISITING RESERVE MY A#%

20-G-3 gives the company the right to combine or split trips.

20-I-4-b is correct for visiting reserve provision.

Make sure you look at 20-L-2 to ensure trip complies with return time limits.

If you are now flying on a day off look at 20-L-6-b add pay and 5-F-5 min days off for reserves.

Best I can help you without looking at your schedule. However, what you posted looks legit based on your description.

I don't know which section you filed the PDR with but Hotline is appropriate for reassignment questions. You'll get a quick reply.

Good point. I looked at ORD bid package right away when this all started. Trip was stand alone one day ID in bid package. Thank you

The other thing is notification. If you don't acknowledge the change in CCS, you don't get a phone call, just don't do it. You are not legally notified unless you do the acknowledgment or phone contact. UAL has to give you legal notification of the change, and remember, ACARS contact is not legal notification.

You would be amazed at the things that appear in schedules, and then disappear, all without proper notifications.
