No, you can't opt out of the payments. UAL is agency shop, meaning if you aren't a member of the union, you still pay a "maintenance" fee for the contract. You can opt out of the union, but you still have to pay.

Isn't that important detail the target of the proposed legislation? My read is that they're trying to outlaw agency shop, i.e. The right to work without having to pay.
