I had Oscar on a flight about 7 months ago and he said that it didn't make sense to be stuck with 65 brand new old technology 737s when there was a new model already in production.

So...why did we stick ourselves with old technology 777-300s when the 777x/A350 is available? Also, did he mention the new Air Wisconsin FFD deal? Seems to me, we canceled the 737s and hired more old technology RJs.

Not only were they the older, less efficient, NG technology but they were the smaller -700s which means a higher cost per seat. Even if you wanted the smaller size, wait for the MAX (or neo) and you're getting the next generation efficiency improvement which helps offset the lower per-seat efficiency of the smaller airplane.

WASHINGTON DC -- United Airlines has ordered 40 Boeing 737-700s as part of its programme to retire small regional jets.
Deliveries of the 737s will begin in the middle of 2017 and will allow the Chicago-based carrier to reduce its fleet of 50-seat aircraft by more than half by 2019, it says.
United had 256 50-seat regional jets at the end of 2015.
"These aircraft are an efficient way to meet those needs while reducing 50-seat flying," says Gerry Laderman, acting chief financial officer of United, citing improved passenger comfort and additional amenities on the 737s compared to the smaller jets.
The airline had considered the 110-set Bombardier CS100 and both the 90-seat Embraer 190 and 120-seat E190-E2 aircraft for a small mainline narrowbody order.
United configures its 737-700s with 118 seats.

Just passing on what I heard; seems plausible, but I'm no expert in Machiavellian machinations.

The cost of a new 76 seat rj is in the low 20 millions. The cost of the cx 700's was said to be in the 22-23 million range. The 700 burns 200-300 more lbs per hour than a 76 seat rj yet carries almost 50 more pax with the slim line seats.
Had the company converted the order to max7's I'd buy the old v new technology argument. But the conversation were to max10's, which further increase the gap between 76-150 seats. Yet, how many current generation E175's (old technology) have been added by Skywest and Mesa in the last few years?
My guess is Kirby's gonna come asking for scope relief next summer. Hopefully when the NC tells him emphatically NO and that it's a non starter, the company will start providing some clarity on the SNB fleet plan.

AWAC wasn't an addition, that flying just shifted. Same outsourced product, different banner.

Year end Rj count for 2017 is 21 jets higher than year end 2016 according to the latest Investor Update on United.com. But we are netting 5 additional mainline jets in the same period...so we got that going for us...which is nice.
