Acquired via merger, not choice. There are plenty of CFM 319 and 320s that are and have been available on the used market and none are on the ramp today. Y'all may be right, but a sub-fleet of 10 doesn't give the scale to look past the inefficiencies IMHO. American bought both with their Airbus fleet.....if you're buying 50 or 100 then it may not matter. Only 10, not so much. But again, I'm just a line guy......we'll see how things go.

So other then some parts unique to the -5B what other inefficiencies are there that would a big enough deterrent to acquiring them?
Option A is to get more IAE powered planes, but if that's not possible then move on to option B, the CFM planes. Any additional Airbus is a good Airbus.
But like you say, us peons are just line guys..we have no say regarding aircraft decisions.

The decision to forgo ordering the C Series last year is looking better and better in hindsight. Better lucky than good! (no comment on deferring the -700s).

I don't envy the pickle DAL finds itself in now, and first delivery is only six or so months away.

Indeed. Boeing has been DOA since the merger, they no longer innovate and are no longer are a aerospace leader, just a lucrative DoD contract holder.
Has anyone read the Dept. of Commerce ruling? I wonder if the solution is to set up an offshore leasing company, not subject to the duties, then lease them to US operators?

Interesting tidbits Kirby provided in the LAX unplugged video:
1) He reiterated that we're going to compete and grow, unlike the past.
2) The reason we don't have any new airbuses on order is because American overpaid for them. They did, however, negotiate some preferred customer clause (or something to that effect). In short if Airbus gives us a better deal, they'd have to "cut American a check" for the difference.
3) The A350 deferral was indeed kicking the van down the road. When 2022 roles around they will ask both Boeing and Airbus for an RFP and then decide what the best replacement for the 777 will be.
4) The 756 isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
5) Terminal 9 is coming to LAX.
Anyway it's some food for thought.

4. He mentioned refurbishing newer 756 frames. Odds are pretty good we'd gobble up some newer used frames at the right price, DAL's -400s come to mind. Gotta stretch out the 756 fleet at least until the 797 comes on line (even 2025 seems rather optimistic to me).
