Who knows maybe they can convince Boeing to adopt a RR option. Actually we should convince Southwest that a RR option is vital

Slop
The new management team at UAL doesn't want the A350 for two reasons: 1) we overpaid 2) cost of a new fleet. They have the flexibility to change aircraft on order at Airbus. The only hold was the the previous management group signed a 20 year engine contract with RR.....it was apparently iron clad and would cost UAL 2 billion. So they renegotiated the 350 purchase price by going from the 350-1000 to the 350-900. This is apparently makes the 350 purchase price very attractive. There is still a cost to adding a fleet when the 777 with addition of the -300 can do it. At the end of the day RR engine deal is what will bring the 350 to UAL.

As to the fleet type, engine, or variant - it's ridiculous to suggest that "we" have any input.
Hold the line on scope & FUPM.

"We", as in pilots, want the 350 because it represents a commitment by UAL to operate a fleet of wide body aircraft. Together with the 787 and 777, the 350 order maintains a consistent number of "highest paying jobs" in the fleet in a retire & replace cycle.. More wide bodies, more career progression. Simple as that.

Sorry Slop, I think the most direct answer is that "we" don't really care what engine is on the 350 or any other aircraft for that matter. (o.k. some fanboys out there may care, but the vast majority of pilots don't). The problem with RR on the 350 is that the deal described by 82spukram trapped UAL into buying RR engines with no escape. I'm not prepared or inclined to debate the merits of 350s vs. 777s, but I think I can safely say that in a dynamic business like ours hard locking yourself into a 20 year engine contract is myopic.
