Hired at Delta, UAL email

He'll be a new hire flying international if he wants out of NYC on the 757/767, mostly JFK but also EWR. So, 6 months from now he's enjoying DUB, SNN, CDG, AMS, BRU, MAD, AGP, PSA, ZRH, MAN, VCE, EDI, LIS, GOW or if things go wrong in his bidding LHR.

As others have said, definitely don't walk away from DAL for a bird in the bush at United. I've known at least one guy who I thought was an easy in that didn't end up getting the offer- you never know. If you can swing the UAL interview around your DAL training schedule, go for it, and if you're lucky, you may end up with the opportunity to switch over to UAL if that's what you really want.
I don't know your situation, but it sounds like your reasons for wanting the UAL job are a bit short-term. Both companies are a dream job for most pilots in the world right now, and if you can live in a junior base at either airline without having to relocate, that's about 95% of what's going to make your life great. Do NOT take a gamble on that extra 5%. I don't think I'd even go as far as to request a later training date at DAL to buy time. Get on a seniority list, and watch your number start moving. Either way, congratulations on the new job and good luck in your career.

Take the job at DAL, it's the only offer you've got...
IF you get hired at UAL, see where you are with DAL by the time you've got a scheduled class date and take it from there... who knows, you may be a CA at DAL by then at the rate things are going.

Never quit a job unless you have one to go to and you'll never know if you made the right choice until the day you retire.
In other words take the first job. If you're lucky enough to have the opportunity to choose between two guaranteed jobs, take the one based on current information that is the best fit.

Take the job at Delta and go to class. Then, as the process at UAL unveils itself to you participate in it. You may end up with a bird in the hand, and another in your pocket. Much better than two birds in the bush. Then, you can decide weather you want to make gumbo or stir fry them birds.
It's a business. Just like any other. People start one job, and then they pull up stakes and go to another. Not a big deal. You are young enough to be able to do this. I've seen people work at an airline for 17 years, then decide to leave and start at the bottom again. You can do it in 17 days if it all works out.

I guess I should have said that I will not be turning down Delta. The question is should I turn down UAL before interviewing to avoid burning the bridge or maybe turning down a job later as opposed to an interview now. Either way I won't turn anyone down until I have a Delta ID around my neck. If I was lucky enough to get UAL I would most likely already be in Delta training and have to quit. International is not something I want right now but long term UAL has the international. Deltas is dwindling. Now I just want to be on a junior fleet as wife is a pilot and a new baby. Being in the junior bases is great for that! Thanks for all the input. I'll continue with both airlines until I'm forced to make a decision!
