Default Tips for making the most out of VHDOs

I'm looking to make a little extra money this month, so I put some VHDOs on my schedule. I see some open time, and the reserve coverage isn't great...

Do I have to wait for the company to call, or is there any way to be proactive and try to get a VHDO call? Can I try to pick the trip up? Should I just call and ask? I'd appreciate any techniques you all have had success with, thanks!

What fleet, seat, and base? Answers to your questions will vary based on the size of the base and the amount of flying...Int'l vs domestic.

Are you still 320 EWR?

They're supposed to go in seniority order if I'm not mistaken so calling them may or may not help. I know there have been some grievances filed for this very thing when someone junior got a VDO trip when it should have gone to someone else.

You sign up... They call u in Order of seniority... Guys on SRM and VDOs watch this list like Hawks... Crew desk can't get away with anything. VDOs get called first... Then SRM list.

VDO use is all luck of the draw and being in the right place at the right time. If you live in base when the schedules takes a dump due to a weather event...then you have a better chance of being used. Aside from wx, the only other time I've gotten used was when there is an equipment substitution and they have to scramble to find a crew. Living in base is e key.

This..... I have a fairly short and easy commute but was only able to do about 1 out of the 7 or 8 VDOs offered to me this year due to it always being short notice...
