Another alarming trend--thread drift ahead....

The last 2 calls I've gotten from the crew desk, they are using off grid phones again. The caller ID comes up as blocked. No way to ID the crew desk....ya'll be careful out there!

They left me a voice mail with no details. "This is the crew desk with a vdo opportunity, please call back if you're interested."

You're under no obligation to accept a trip on VDO, right? I know you aren't on SRM, but I haven't sat reserve on this contract.

If they get you on the phone when they call you, they can assign you the trip. I have declined a VDO trip and they moved on to the next guy...but they are well within their rights to give you the trip.

If you return a call because they didn't leave any details, you can say thanks, but no thanks. You should have checked CCS prior to returning their call to see what they will be off loading on you.

^^^THIS^^^ Lookup trips in open time and see if you want it... if so, call back.

In the contract it says that they can give you a SC or FSB on a VDO. But they still have to call. Correct??

And just for clarification, I don't have to answer the phone on a day off even if I VDO'ed it? And they can't just put something on my schedule without asking first?

5-E-8-b VDO When a Reserve is contactable (i.e, he is required to be phone available), he may not withdraw the conversion at the time of assignment or between 1100 and 1500.

This blurb is on page 67 of the UPA. It is an ALPA highlight (clarification) from the April 8th version. My take is...if you VDO, you are on reserve. So, I would answer the phone.

I was specifically told that a VDO is still a day off, by my new hire mentor. He sent a few past mec update emails that confirmed this. You are under no obligation to answer your phone, but you can't call and withdraw your vdo during the time that you WOULD be contactable were you on reserve.

For those saying check your schedule, something must have changed, because the trip I got was not in open time (at least on crew companion), and it did not get put on my schedule. So I had to call them blind... But it worked out in my favor!

Also of note, per my mentor (backed up by the alpa emails), there is no "required" call out time for a vdo. So, if you are a commuter and don't want to do it, just let them know that you can't get there in time.
