Rumor Brian Znotins No Longer With United

Perhaps, we didn't have the right fleet mix when we merged and guppies were tasked with doing segments it was not really optimized for. Meaning a lot more trans cons, Hawaii, in and out of DEN a bit more. BOS-SFO comes to mind.
Maybe why, in the last couple of years they have been more weight restricted. Hmm, seemed to happen a bit more when we started getting rid of 757's. Different planes, different capabilities, different missions. Using the wrong plane on a route, this will happen. We are still working on getting the right planes on the right routes, and fleet mixes.

Problem is it varies. Take BOS-SFO. Usual wind and SFO is VFR I'm sure the guppy kills the 757 in CASM. Throw up a stiff headwind, require an alternate, or worse... Both, now the guppy can't even do it. The guppy problems though have longer term reverberations you can't quantify in angry/disgruntled passengers on those occasions where it falls on its face.

BTW, there was a HUGE uproar about the 757's constantly having to stop for fuel on the TATL trips a couple of years back. It's not the plane at fault, it's network trying to force them onto a route that doesn't work all the time.

Agreed. I hate the Guppy. Absolutely hate it. The 757 is my favorite airplane of all time, and if they had kept the SEA base open I would have retired on the thing and been totally happy. But in my 2 years on the jet I haven't had one weight restricted flight. Lucky? Probably, as I don't see much Denver, but I've had more experience with weigh restrictions on the Airbus than the Guppster. I think they are figuring out how to use the thing most effectively. If they want to go find 100 used 757's, it'll be like Christmas for me. But even I can't argue with the economics of the 900ER's. I can't hear anything, I'll probably have back issues for life, and if I get one decent landing a year I'll be extatic, but the weight issues are largely worked out.
