Default Vintage Lual pilot wings...some info please

I was just randomly browsing eBay and saw some vintage pilot wings for sale. Some have diamonds or rubies in them. Some have an oak leaf cluster with a diamond or ruby in it.

I was just curious about the history of this. Anyone know when it started-ended, when you were awarded something, and what the leaf cluster meant. I think the seller said it was mgt pilot wings.

Just thought that was a cool way of recognized service. Not like the pick a prize thing we have now.

Thanks in advance.

I have been looking at those as well. I was the high bidder a few weeks ago for a pair and was outbid by the only other bidder at the last minute (176.00 plus) only to receive an email shortly after the bidding closed telling me that the other bidder backed out and the wings were available to me at my last bid price. Smelled fishy so I declined and told the seller I didn't like how it went down. He then admitted that he lied about the other bidder backing out and that the truth was he had multiple pairs of these wings and didn't want to dilute the price but that I could buy them now at 150.00 or something. I lost interest. Be careful out there.

Best as I can recall.

Each diamond - it was at best a diamond chip - represents five years of service per chip.

I had a leaf cluster but trust me I wasn't management!!

May have been another milestone like 30 or 35 years of service - I had 37. Perhaps Line Check Airman? (They were never considered mgmt during my time.)

Ruby? Another time on property award. Perhaps ruby was 30 years and the leaf cluster 35 or the other way around.

At one time I might have cared what they meant.

Thanks for some info. Do you know when they started or ended this?

Congrats on a 37year tenure.

When Jeff took over and everything changed to CO livery...and uniforms.

Also, the wreath-like thing over the UAL logo with prop, had 4 stars in it. Each star represented one of the 4 airlines that merged to form UAL. So, it had a very long tradition behind it.

If any one had asked me, I would have kept the traditional UAL wings, and added a 5th star for CO. Might have been a classy way to go, but....we got plastic looking stuff instead with no character.

(Of course this excluded the Capital purchase in, what 1961? and the Pan Am Pacific division purchase. But those really weren't mergers.)
