I'll stick up for ya Eddie eventhough I abhor the hat. Amazing how complicated people make this job. It's a uniform you wear it. Guess I find other focus for outrage in life.
My friends in the corp world are envious of me. Most of them have to bow to the hard peer pressure and dump their work wardrobes every couple years to keep semi in style. And we moan about cheap pants. And as much as I hate it, yes the flying public likes the hat for some god awful reason.
And the bomber jacket? Ugh thanks Alaska and Southwest. Now we have legions of mid aged wht men who think they have a casual incognito layover coat. Hope u got the Velcro patch cover all set up fella! The best are the guys who praise the jacket's multiple pockets for allowing paperwork storage options like their mil flt suit.

Scott,
Do whatever you want. I really don't care. Be bitter if you want. If you want to stick it to the man and not wear your hat, then go for it. Looking professional and flying professional are not mutually exclusive. It is possible to do both. Drop me a pm if you want some tips.
As a side note, I flew with some really great captains that joined UAL very young, and knew the system and airplane well. I also found that the handful of pilots I came across that had the bad attitude you display were also hired young. There were only a few but they were memorable. How old were you when you were hired at UAL?

If you don't think that flying jets for fair pay is "awesome"... and based on your apparent disdain for UAL... why don't you just resign? Put your money where your mouth is. After all, they are screwing you by not meeting the terms of the contract... right?
If you don't quit, at least try to be pleasant. Your F/O's really do not want to hear your opinions on the company for 3 days.
And grab a walk around for them every now and then.
You're welcome.

Telling someone to quit is an easy out, gutless move. Walk in someone's shoes for the last 20+ years before you open your mouth.
Fair pay and fair compensation are two separate issues. Telling someone to grab a walk around solidifies the arrogance you display.
My suggestion to you is to sit back, close your mouth, listen and learn.
Unbelievable.

Nice try Ace. That San Bruno comment I made was in reference to those who think it is OK to live in glass houses and throw stones. Did you attend Leap? Were you awake? Evidently, you didn't learn anything, which is troubling.

Wow, good news about an upcoming improvement in uniforms turns into a seven page p!$$ing contest about hats?
Would everyone be happier if we got rid of the Officer's wheel cap and went with the much more portable garrison (aka flight) cap, that you can tuck under your belt when not wearing? /sarcasm off
Besides, everyone knows people aren't wearing enough hats.

The bottom line is this. If you fly international in particular, you will look out of place with anything less than a full uniform on. You might not like it, but that is the way it is. I guess it comes down to your own personal standards. Scott and Svergin would have been perfectly happy showing up with a ragtag looking crew like the AA one I observed in PEK (we are sticking it to the company man, by ignoring the FOM / FAOM and looking like crap!) Personally, I found it to be an embarrassment in a terminal full of crews that adhered to a much higher standard.

I also still work for Ual so I actually have a horse in this race. He clearly doesn't.

Have you ever read anything in the FOM? Apparently you have a reading comprehension problem.

As a question, on the 737 I went through the worst 121 school I have ever been through. It was pathetic. An embarrassment. Does me wearing a hat make that better? Or should we focus on things that really matter?

A ragtag crew because we didn't have a hat? Are you kidding me? On the 747 I flew with the most professional crews I have ever flown with and we regularly had not one hat amongst the 4 of us.
