The public does care. Not sure how or why you want to AGAIN make this a LCAL vs LUAL issue. It is over LUAL and LCAL are dead, so is your pension and all that stuff. Let's make the new place great.
Here is an article you should read with an open mind.

9 Reasons Why Your Image Is Everything - Business Insider
1. First impressions
2-5. Social networks are dangerous (news?)
6. Protect your reputation
7-8. Be pretty. Seriously, you're a failure if you aren't.
9. Be afraid of the Internet
Not one of those addressed what be do daily. Being good at your job.
Possibly one of the most narcissistic garbage articles I have ever read. Thanks for that.

Of course wearing any part of a uniform will not magically make you a better pilot. But, look at how the team dresses on your next charter. I have always seen them dressed with a suit and tie. Will it make them better players? No, it gives the pubic who may see them the aura of professionalism. Just like the hat.

If you showed up for your UAL/CAL interview with a suit and tie you understand appearances sometimes matter... They don't land the plane for you but they make a lasting impression... Something I'm reminded of when I see the occasional black Velcro sneaker club member or the spikey haired backpack and sunglasses bro

Touch a nerve? I don't wear a hat either when the FOM says I don't have to, but the comparison that was made of the AA vs China crew was the point. They yellow shirt, shiney pants, Velcro shoe crowd don't exactly inspire confidence or respect either.

I make first impressions everyday at work. With the Passengers, other crew, gate agents etc....

Here is what touched a nerve. Competence vs. image. I will take any experienced United crew not wearing hats over any, literally any Asian crew looking absolutely perfect. We need more airmanship. The current ual training is garbage. Take leap as an example... The examples outlined there were frighteningly close to tragedy. How about institutional and corporate professionalism leading through example. You guys are worried about image...

True, but the standards are clearly delineated in the FOM and a condition for our employment is following the FOM. Personally, not a fan of hats, mandatory jackets, or even ties, but I can follow the rules when they're reasonable, even if I don't like them.

I worked for UAL 15 years ago, and no one forced me to. They asked that I wear a hat sometimes. Happy to do so, since they let me fly their jets for pay.
I never wear hats otherwise. Don't like them. But heh... no one forced me to work at UAL, so I thought it was appropriate to wear the hat when they asked.
I think it's funny how pilots "will do anything!" to work at an airline... and then 5 years later, they are jaded and have an "F' that!!" attitude toward little things.

Your article was arguably trite. Play well with others and be pretty! So we are down to first impressions. I am not a professional athlete. I am an airline pilot. Professional competency is how I make my money. I am thoughtful wrt to safety and courtesy. Image is by far the least important thing I do. Thank goodness for that. Pretty ugly, so I would fail miserably wrt image is everything.
