The 90's truly sucked in commercial aviation. Good for guys that made it work and got their careers going in the right direction. Night flying was hard. I did it for 2 years flying single pilot night freight in the early 90's. My plan was to go Fed Ex back then. I didn't have enough Turbine PIC back then to be competitive. But, it did work out fine. Maybe glad Fed Ex didn't come calling.

The 90's sucked real bad. From 92-99 I had 3 jobs. One flying, one military (guard), and one teaching. I hope those getting into this career now can just have a normal life and a more stable career path.

What makes the MD11 more palatable IMHO is the red-eyes you will be doing are largely one leg in and out. The major ass kicker IMHO is a hub turn with more than 2 legs on the outbound leg. Sitting 30-90 minutes on the ground then doing one more leg 0500-0800 is a tough, tough gig. That is the what the 757 does quite a bit, and because bidpacks are blended now (that may change soon...) 767 pilots get a taste of that here and there too.

Long answer to a short question--odds are you will still be doing back side ops for while on the -11 domestically. If I had to do it, though, I'd much much rather do it in that comfortable jet than any of the boeings. Schedule is the primary reason, but the ergonomics of the -11 are also a bit better...having an oven, a coffee maker, and a much more comfortable seat.
Thank you, Sir. Appreciate the information. I'm trying to make a well-educated decision and this helps paint the picture a bit more for my family and I.

And the 2000s were any better? I think anyone graduating in the 90's was hit just as hard by the 2000s. Things have only picked up in the last few years and now us young guys of the '90s are middle-aged guys still hoping for a chance to get on a with a major. Wish I were as bright eyed and bushy tailed as I was back then.

for sure. I reckon there's two things you can't change. Your birthday and your date of hire. Timing is everything. Wish I had gotten a gig working on the set of Charlie's Angels. That would have been fun.
