After all this discussion...he went to the scab cab. Oh well. You would of loved the 747.

I had a chance to fly it years ago and went elsewhere thinking that I'd get another chance. What a dolt.

Days off, pay check, and QOL. Only priorities that should matter. Six weeks away from family for another training event is not worth it just to be able to say "I flew The Whale!"

During those six weeks you're still going to fly right? So you'll still be away from your family. TK transitions are essentially a series of five to six long five day trips. Essentially, you're spending 6-10 extra days away from your family for that 400 type rating. Your schedule going forward will more than repay your family.

Plus you are making 90 or 93 hours a month plus round the clock per diem. Yea, I would take that bullet. You have to go to TK anyways...I would take the 400. You may find you hate that sort of flying. I'd rather find out on the plane that you will eventually get bumped from.

Some 20 years I was performing an acceptance flight on a 744. The other seasoned skipper in the right seat related to me the following... "The number of engines you're flying is proportionate to the number of wives. Including the APU if you want to include exes."

Ouch!

If it were me, I'd be sitting reserve as a local so 6-10 days is pretty low. Been away enough nights from fam to prevent nifty coolness of big jets to cloud my judgement. Besides a stint at TK means being surrounded by middle aged men in golf shirts and white tennis shoes. Less of that the better. JMHO
