I wouldn't know Todd from Santa, but after 37+ years if there's to be a "unite" there has to be a cause. If Todd's a bully nothing will get done.

The TA results showed, next to the strike in 85, the most "United" group I've seen in many years.

Did you listen Todd or will you "dominate?"

I think the second poster meant to state two different phrases:

(1) "dominate" against the company

and

(2). "Unite" the pilot group.

Todd has no interest in dominating pilots, so you can keep your powder dry.

Anybody got a background on Todd? I never heard of him other than on APC that he was the grievance chair.

A Message from Captain Todd Insler

RESULTS MATTER

Dear ALPA Brothers and Sisters,

I write to you today regarding our Union and our future. As Chairman of the UALMEC Grievance Committee, I love the work we accomplish and the satisfaction I get from improving pilots’ lives while furthering our profession. With the encouragement of MEC members, Committee members, and line pilots who share this passion, I have recently declared my willingness to serve our pilots as our next UALMEC Master Chairman.

From our most junior pilot to our most senior, all members must always be represented equally, and nothing is more important to our collective success than the stewardship of our pilot group. Our most effective Master Chairmen have come to the job with solid foundations of successful ALPA committee work. In this regard, I believe my resume is strong, and I would like to share a bit about my qualifications. I began ALPA work early in my career, serving pilots in various committee and representative positions at several airlines. After being hired at United, I served as the editor of the Council 52 newsletter, The New York Report. My goal was to provide our pilots with the most timely, reliable and factual information possible.

Shortly after the horrific events of September 11, 2001, I was asked to serve as the Council 52 (JFK) Grievance Chairman. In 2005, I was elected to serve as a member of both the UALMEC Grievance Committee and the United Pilots’ System Board of Adjustment. Since then, I have served as Member, Vice Chairman, and Chairman of the UALMEC Grievance Committee. As Chairman, I oversee the United Pilots’ System Board of Adjustment, as well as the Pilot Data Reporting system (PDR) ALPA Answers Hotline. Additionally, I serve as a member of the ALPA National Information Technology Advisory Committee (ITAC).

Over the years, pilots have asked me why I do ALPA work. I do it for my family, your families, and the betterment of our careers. My willingness to serve was strengthened by the never ending support of my wife Nina, our two children, and the desire to make all of our pilots’ lives better. While we are fortunate in many ways, our professional and personal lives also come with hardships. Too often we convince ourselves we must endure, minimize, or disregard these issues. Our lives are complex, and our task as a labor union is not easy. The powerful forces that are allied against us must be recognized. They have money, time, and resources that we do not, so we cannot afford anything less than the strongest leadership possible to guide our union and collective future. To achieve our potential as a pilot group, we must demand professionalism in representation.

Helping pilots understand and enforce our contract while ensuring the company lives up to the negotiated terms of the UPA is a deeply rewarding experience for me. Twenty-three years of ALPA volunteerism developed and honed my abilities as a leader capable of furthering our collective interests. Many of you know me through my work on the Grievance Committee. That work touches literally every aspect of our contract, including Air Safety, Hotels, Family Awareness, Training, Scope, Scheduling, Negotiating, and Retirement & Insurance. It has provided me well rounded experience and an extensive working knowledge of our contract. I have a long and successful track record of establishing and maintaining the respect of company representatives, lawyers, neutral arbitrators, ALPA National, other ALPA carriers, and most importantly, United pilots.

The Grievance Committee and the sub-committees we oversee were among the first to recognize the value of a successful integration. We recognized the necessity of cooperation early on and built on one another’s strengths by including dedicated volunteers from all domiciles. This inclusivity has been tremendously successful for our pilots, and the Grievance Committee’s results speak for themselves. Since I took office as Chairman, we have prevailed in virtually every grievance brought to the System Board of Adjustment with a success rate in the high 90th percentile. The following is a small sampling of the successes that have returned substantial value to our pilot group:

● Past Practice Award - Management dictated that the UPA was a new agreement with a new Company, thereby claiming that past practice did not exist. This would have had a devastating impact on our collective futures if it had continued. We grieved this and won at the System Board of Adjustment, thereby preserving and enforcing a wealth of past practices, and ensuring our rights going forward.
● Retiring Pilot Full Month Pay – Management unilaterally discontinued the retiring pilot pay benefit. We defended our contractual rights and won, thus preserving an average final month pay benefit to the retiring pilot of $30,000.
● Reserve “First In-First Out” Settlement - Awarded pilots ADD PAY for Short Call or Field Standby, hotels for both, and vacation day credits.
● E Trip Trader Settlement - We parlayed the FIFO settlement into an additional benefit, ultimately resulting in significant management changes in Flight Operations and Labor Relations.
● Line Check Airman Pay for Training Months - When management refused to pay LCA’s for training months, we upheld the UPA and our pilots were paid.
● Engineering Flights - Scope rights were violated when engineering pilots operated certain flights, thereby excluding line pilots from opportunities protected in the UPA. We protected our Scope rights, limited the use of engineering pilots, and assured line pilots were assigned and properly displaced with pay.
● Uniform Alteration and Reimbursement - When management forced pilots, including new hires, to pay for alterations of ill-fitting uniforms, we upheld the UPA and our pilots were reimbursed.
● Flown By Ops (FBO) - When management decided they wanted to solve staffing problems during OE training by ignoring our contract, we brought the issue to the System Board of Adjustment. The Arbitrator decided that the Company cannot, at its whim, move pilots from seat to seat on the flight deck for training, thereby abrogating seniority and bid awards. If the Company needs to conduct OE, the pilot gets FBO’d and is thus paid for the trip. Affected pilots will receive extra vacation days for past violations, and our contractual rights have been upheld.
● NQ for Landings - Under the UPA, many pilots who lose currency must attend landings class for no compensation on days off. Under our settlement, most pilots will receive pay for attending landings class after going NQ and will also keep their awarded schedules.

To a large degree the course we set will be determined by the outcome of the Contract Extension Tentative Agreement (TA) that you began voting on this week. Every pilot will have the opportunity to participate in this process, one that will shape our collective future for years to come. I strongly encourage you to keep an open mind as you educate yourself and participate in the process. Should the pilots reject the TA, we will aggressively pursue Section 6 negotiations. Should the pilots ratify the TA, we can and will, if I am elected, immediately begin fixing all of the unfinished business of the UPA. I intend to build our union into an efficient and strong force through education and mentorship. We will ensure the highest functioning of our committee structure, and we will continue to vigorously enforce and defend the contract.

By governance, our LEC Officers alone vote for the MEC Officers and Committee members. You can and should provide guidance to your representatives. Become involved by speaking with your fellow pilots at every opportunity. Let your LEC Officers know whom you support and the reasons why. I ask that you tell them you support continuing the accomplishments and improvements gained through Todd Insler’s dedication to our pilots and ask them to endorse my candidacy for Master Chairman.

I am a line pilot who is your advocate. We still have much work to do, and I look forward to our continued success. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Results matter. Together we will continue to accomplish great things.

Fraternally,

Captain Todd Insler

My "powder" is dry, but my point is this; unity does come from great leaders, but they always have a cause to unify around.

Our strike.
The ISL.
A contract.
Tilton
...

I just read Todd's letter and it's really the same old stuff and I will bet money (ok beers, no make that a cup of joe) this time next year the very same people will be complaining about Todd like they do Jay H.

It gets old.

The best way to live as a pilot is to support your fellow pilot, honor the contract, protect the customers on your airplane, and enjoy your days off. And don't be an ass to others.

Well at least I try.

And I mean what I wrote about the TA results. It says, no screams, a lot about the mind set of the current pilot group. Show me the cash!!!

I'm okay with that.

Funny. JH is the first, and only, MEC chairman we have ever had that I approve of. He got us contract 2012, got us through the ISL, and got us through the TA, with far less "anger" and divisiveness than anyone we ever had in the past.

UAL's ALPA has always been about anger, and trying to rally us around anger. JH didn't do that, and got results.

For that, I thank him, sincerely.

I hope Todd does as well.

He is going to deliver that's what I think

Funny, JH endorsed another guy. Was electing in TI a way of the current MEC to rebuke and show JH the door?
