Reserve days off
I tried to bid for MLK weekend off, but as a new hire, I couldn't get it. I have a two day stretch (16-17) of reserve. I heard from one Captain that short calls get used last and my best bet to not get used is to bid for a short call. Anyone have any tips to not make my phone ring? I'm on probation so I'm not calling in sick unless I really am. Thanks for the help!

It's very unusual that they would only give you a block of 2 RSV days. Short calls get used last, but they are the only ones available for assignments inside of 12 hours obviously. I have been getting used more frequently off of short calls lately. I would say 50/50. If your far enough down the list don't pick up anything. If you start getting close to the top of your silo you can pick up a short call late on your first day releasing you from phone availability for the majority of that day. There are lots of little tricks you can use to reduce the chance of getting a trip, but they don't always work. Bottom line is make sure no matter what you do to keep from working, you are always in a position to get to work if you have to.

If it's any help, I've been used on short call about 20% of the time opposed to 50%-80% on long call. Depends on who else is on short call, their silo vs yours and time of short call. Your situation may vary.
On another note, does anyone have the reference in the contract for reserve pay regarding an assignment on fsb only to have it taken off my schedule 30 min prior to departure? I understand you resort back to long call, but would the credit remain for the assignment?

Since you didn't specify if you were a commuter I'm not sure what advice to give you. If you live within short call driving distance you have a lot more moves available to you to keep from working. Needing 2 flights is a huge handicap.

Yeah, I should have added more details. I live real close to the airport in base and I'll be able to make any trip, no problem, there's just an event I really want to go to, but it's not something that would warrant special treatment. Sounds like the short call option isn't much better. Thanks for the tips!

Bid a shortcall(s) on you last day or days on the previous block of days. At a minimum that will possibly put you further down the FIFO list when that weekend shows up.
You could also call and see if they will move days off for you.

I would try for a 1600 or so short call on day 1. That keeps you clear of any 2 day trips that start before then. Also there are not that many report times after that. If unused, your "able to report" time would be 1900 on day 2. Pretty much unusable.
