Half Wings
Did the search and couldn't really find the answer.
Is the ALPA half wing connected to your probationary year or just your first year with United?
I was a July 2015 new hire and dropped mil leave in November. I'll be on mil leave through the summer and possibly through all of 2016. When I return I'll still have 8 months of probation left but will have been with United longer than 1 year. Do I continue to wear the half wings or wear the full?
Thanks!

I would say linked more to probation. It is also a symbol that you need protection. Imagine you're commuting and two of you show up for the jumpseat. Perhaps the more senior pilot will give you the seat cause he sees you're a half winger and therefore on probation. Unlikely you say? Perhaps not, there are some amazing folks here. And of course let's not forgot the free beer :->

I agree with the above. I'll be turning in my half wings for a 15 year pin soon. I'd like to thank all the awesome captains I've flown with out of EWR on the 756 for all the beers. But the half wings are more than just free drinks. When captains (and other FO's I fly with) see the pin all have been incredible in their instruction, patience and understanding that I don't know all that is to be known about the plane. Part of me will be sad to exchange the pin!

Really glad you've had that experience. If I might just add, the half wing is also a very good indicator to Captains that you DON'T have the full protection of the union yet, so it is extremely important that you are protected in the day to day shenanigans that occur out on the line.
