Fixes to reserve
#201
There was some discussion earlier regarding commuting while on long call. The contract says that once converted to short call you are no longer on call until the short call assignment starts. So where does this come into play? When you finish an actual flying assignment and revert back to long call for several more days but want to go home?
You stay on SC from the scheduled start time and it automatically ends 14 hours later… and you are required to answer the phone during this time and be available to get to airport in 2.5 hours or less. Once the 14 hour period is complete you automatically go on LC again (phone available 24/7)… so you can go home if you commute in for the SC.

Once your assigned a trip/SC/FSB you are not required to answer the call until the report time/start of the field assignment or SC. If you do answer the phone then all bets are off and they can reassign you.

And please show me where it states that we are required to answer the phone on short call? My understanding is that you are required to return their call within a reasonable amount of time. Last I heard, reasonable was within 30 mins.
Not trying to split hairs, just like to see things in print. For example, a friend of mine was just given grief by a scheduler who insisted that 15 minutes was the limit. He disagreed and then spoke with a supervisor, who sided with him. We need to keep contractual stuff free from individual interpretation, whether its in print or based on past practice.
I never answer my phone, I always let it go to VM and I then return their call within a reasonable amount of time. This used to give you a chance to check the assignment for contractual legality and to verify your status on FIFO, but that little gem disappeared. Never had anyone blast me for that.

And my technique only...I always tell the scheduler when I take the assignment that traffic sucks to airport because the beltway is a mess. I don't care if it's rush hour or 3am. It sort of prepares them for the dissapointment when I don't make it on their schedule.

However, on the opposite spectrum, since I live only 15 minutes from the airport, I'll try to squeeze out close in parking and some add pay by coming in quicker if offered up.

3 years on SC/LC from 05-08. Never used on SC. In the last 2 years I bid reserve voluntarily about half the time. I was used on SC once, and called out illegally on another resulting in SNG 2 hour add pay. I probably average 11 or 12 SC's a month, So I was used 1 SC out of about 140 of them in the last 2 years.
