Tracy Aces were a different group. They were hired near the end of WWII and trained in Tracy, CA (hence the name). They were young and always senior at UAL.
To their credit they were the leaders in contract and safety, but many also knew it and were very "sure" of everything they did.
The 300 hour mentioned were late 60s hires whom United recruited also at a young age. Many actually arrived in Denver with a Private license and UAL paid for their Commercial and Instrument licenses at Clinton Aviation in Denver.
That's the good part. The bad part is many sat F/E for a very long time and some were furloughed for 5-7 years.
The most famous of the group is probably Rick Dubinski. Hired at 21 years old and become a rabid ALPA leader starting in his mid 20s until retirement (as a 747 Captain). The man was feared, hated and respected by Senior Man.

Sign of bad things!
And 1969 TWA hires were furloughed within months of completing F/E training (early 1970). First furlough was for around 7 years. Second and third were only for a handful of years. They were in there fifties before being holding Capt. Lost their pension in bankruptcy in the 1980s.
