ALPA Group Term/LOL VEBA/Disability Lump Sum
Just started getting a bill for this, now in year 2 at UAL.
Isn't this just duplicated coverage? Don't remember this from ALPA brief in INDOC.
Wait, there wasn't one.

The UPA provides many benefits, which you can supplement with additional ALPA coverage.
When it comes to these matters I suggest you contact the appropriate committees or even ALPA itself. Have you logged into the MEC website?

Thank you for your correspondence. Your e-mail has been received by ALPA’s Membership Administration Department and will be directed as appropriate. We will contact you shortly if any additional information is needed to process your request.
Electronic brochure has different names for programs than the bill.
Bottom line is i think we have LTD and insurance paid for, along with some life insurance included in contract compensation.
Just looking for input from anybody who takes the ALPA product or has rejected it. Being signed up and billed without my affirmative choice is not my favorite thing.

You can always call to let them know or send them an email declining continued coverage. From the contact information listed in the back of the ALPA magazine each month:
Membership Insurance (800) 746-2572 or [email protected]
Provide all your pertinent information, including your ALPA number and it should be taken care of. Otherwise, just don't pay the premiums. You won't have coverage if you haven't paid the premiums, right?

You were not signed up and billed for the ALPA insurance. During your first year as a probationary and apprentice member, you qualify for several ALPA insurance plans at no cost to you. Once you start year two, you get a bill for the annual premiums in order to continue coverage for these plans if you choose to do so. You do not have to continue coverage and can simply not pay them if that is your choice.

My big question is opinions on the viability. In my case of not being so young and adequately insured i conclude from the brochure on the site the ALPA Disability Lump Sum is not a a great deal unless you are in your 30s or early 40s. The contractual Disability is sufficient.
YMMV

Thanks. Got a hold of them yesterday via callback and declination email needed to go to [email protected]. However got another letter yesterday prompting payment or a 1% monthly late fee. So if you are off probation one of first things to do is to decide and act on this quickly.

Pay close attention to that as workers comp in many states only pays a % of average state pay. If you are out of first year pay I suspect you will be making significantly more than average. I think I saw 50-70% of average state pay depending on the state you claim in. So you may only get $40k a year max or even less. If you have kids in collage or a large mortgage you will find it tough taking a huge pay cut.
Now I pay much closer attention to the small print, and pay the premium. You never know when you will need it.
