I wish it was that easy but remember 85,000 are not united together. In fact 11,000 are not even close to united together.
One right person, I think that is just too easy. What about the bod, they have done nothing. How about the management below the top person. Are you going to keep them? A bunch of yes people?
How about are entire flight management staff? What have they done, they can;t even get a simple ipad up and running in over 3 years. Did you read the answers from the "leadership" meetings? Not one real answer. Have you sent in suggestions and even received a response from any of these people? Nope, lucky if someone picks up the phone to answer.
I think you would have to clean the entire house, anyone that has been in there for the last 3 years watching this train wreck should be gone. JMO

You're right it won't happen overnight. Although Bethune was no saint, he was one person who did effect change structurally (bringing in his own team) which eventually changed morale which improved the product which eventually changed the public's perception of Continental as a company.
I think the morale part of this, enthusiasm, can actually change in a matter of days though.
If Smizek leaves that alone will be seen as a positive. If his replacement starts off well it would give 85000 people hope that this company may last for a career, not BK in 3 years, and hope is a powerful thing.

We're united in believing there needs to be a change in the LCAL CEO and his departure might go a long way to giving us all a fresh start, a CEO that isn't from either legacy. Smisek is a merger CEO, a hatchet man who didn't need labor. He can be sent on his way with a pat on the back and the BOD saying a face-saving "thanks for merging the two airlines, you did a great job in difficult circumstances" and then they can hire a steady-state CEO to carry us forward.

Those on this thread are not the first to comment on the toxic relationship this airline has had with MGT. and how attracting a "good" MGT. Team will be hard. It is fairly well known.
They called it the worst job in America over 10 years ago. Not much has changed. If I were a CEO I would run away fast from this place. When was the last good UAL CEO?United Comes Untied - Forbes
All I heard from people before the merger was how all you really wanted was our management. (Actually told that by a guy on a hotel van). Be careful what you wish for !!
I hope you are right I really do and I still want to hear the truth as it was told to you, I think I can handle it.

Continental's was in hideous shape under Lorenzo but was still able to attract a pretty good mgmt team under Bethune...we don't want another Ivy League genius looking for a sure bet...I think it is unanimous that we need a CEO w strong leadership abilities and those types don't shy away from difficult tasks...they thrive on it.
