"Senior Manning opportunities may be available on Dec 21 - 22, for 737 Captains (except Guam). If interested, call Crew Scheduling and let them know."
They never just come right out and say we're understaffed for the whole Christmas season, or the Spring, or the Summer. It's day by day, like whistling in the dark, under the self delusion that maybe there isn't a problem.

If you can't live on 100 grand a year when the poverty line is 27 thousand "family of 4" then you have bigger problems.
Dude unless you live in bumf%#k Oklahoma even a 100,000 a year with kids doesnt cut it. Welcome to 2013. That family living on 27k a year is living pretty bad, and I'm supporting the lazy bast@&ds. I was raised where if you want to be successful and have financial security you WORK. Worked for my dad, works for me. Lots of guys work a lot harder for less then I pull in.
Where ya been dude? Since President Obama ran for a 2nd term, the White House/Obama vilifies success (unless they are liberal like George Soros) Take a look at what the Obama/Axelrod re-election machine (and of course the willing press) did to Romney. Set aside his politics for a moment, and look how they smeared him for being successful - pathetic. When I was a kid growing up in a single-parent home, my mom would point to a nice home or luxury car and say to me that if I worked hard I could own one of those one day. Now people look at success and say something like: " Ooooh, look at that rich snob and his oil-burning gas guzzling car. The government should do something about that"

They will never have a shortage of guys tripping over each other to pick up SRM. It doesn't comprehend in their heads that if they just leave it alone and flights start getting canceled then they will have to run a few more Classes

So, WHEN I come back and I will be a line holder and I want to pick up a few hours when the pay is good! I am a BAD guy? What the hell? I want to think we can ALL make money when it counts for us. As long as its contractual. If you do not want it, then thats cool. Cheers, its my day off! woooppppeeee

Not sure I understand your statement "bottoms up". We've got no one on furlough and new-hires in the pipeline - just who or what is your complaint. SRM is contractual and if somebody wants to make a little extra for the month, its their option - nobody gets hurt, except maybe you. I don't get it. When I was a line holder I SRM anytime I needed a little extra for the month. When UAL started furloughing, I stopped - that's the way I roll. Some continued, picking up SRM and as long as the MEC didn't officially come out and say to stop, then I'm not going to look into what is going on in his/her mind; I am going to wonder why the MEC fails to shut it down. That's all

Think of it this way. If we didn't want SRM we would not allow it in the contract. I can see not allowing it with pilots on furlough, etc. but this game of telling pilots its a benefit of the contract when negotiated then bad-mouthing people for taking it is ridiculous.
If its such a negative thing, then we just remove it from the contract in the future.
Frankly I like it. If punished the company monetarily and rewards us when they screw up.

It also helps keep F/Os in the right seat.
And also help keep guys on reserve, on reserve.
You can't have it both ways without acknowledging that its manpower negative overall. They get by with fewer bodies.

The company will just cancel a flight or two (or more) because they've already figured the cost of overstaffing isn't worth the canceled flights.
So the "effort" to not accept to punish the company hasn't working in 30+ years.
We might as well get some extra cash out of it.

Yes but so do airline mergers, seasonal downturns, threats of war and civil unrest. OldMako, you're a glass half-empty kind of person and if you are bothered by your take on SRM, get active in ALPA and become a member of the negotiating team and get rid of SRM. I certainly would not hold it against you. Cheers
