We have an unwritten rule here in LAS on the LUAL side. Commuters list for the jumpseat so that we can see who else may show up and plan the commute accordingly. Preserves seniority and prevents most surprises at the gate.
Sorry, quick finger reservation for the jumpseat is BS and will never see the light of day at United.

And what can possibly go wrong with a system based on an unwritten rule used by some of the the Pilots?
The jump-seat reservation system works pretty good at DAL. It is prioritized going to work, getting home, and lastly for personal use.
It is not perfect, and I can see where senior guys would not like this system, especially if they were under the seniority system their whole career - who wants to change a system just when you are about to receive the benefit of it.
The idea of thinking you have the jump-seat and someone senior showing up at the last minute does not sound that great either.

Not sure why you quotes me here. I fully understand seniority and DOH. LCAL has your seniority number on the printout when you Re cleared for the J/S. Senority is what is used at BOTH airlines now as illustrated by my example of people hired on the same day showing for the J/S at the same time. The SENIOR pilot would get the seat. DOH is only used at LUAL because it is an easy way to determine Senority. Because of this mess of a merger, that is no-longer possible.

Glad it works at Delta... Our system has worked also for the last 2.5 decades that I have been here.

And...with regards to seniority, I have seen cases where an ultra senior guy walks up at the last minute, on purpose, knowing there is a guy trying to go to work--not cool in any universe. Remember, the captain has the final say.
There used to be a guy in Reno that would bump within the last 5 minutes of departure. A couple of times, I could not accept him as a jump seater because he would cause a flight delay and told him to take the next flight. You see, as a courtesy, the other jump seater had his bags in the pit. Unfortunately, he wasn't very happy to see me when he wanted a ride to work.

Some senior guys are willing to write a pass and allow the junior guy have the jump seat knowing he would have no chance of getting on the airplane in the back based on senority. When the plane fills and the senior guy can't get a seat in the back, he usually finds out about 5-10 minutes before departure, he moves to the jumpseat.
What do you think junior guys - is the senior guy wrong for trying to help you? Or should he just go for the jumpseat and leave you at the gate without hope?

You have lived under both systems, but it will never be adopted by the United pilots. It's not even being considered by either side. It's either "Pilot Senority" or DOH.
As far as what can go wrong with a commute. Simple, give yourself enough flights to get to work and if that fails we have a "Prudent Pilot Procedure".

Obviously, its the one you like, but.... with the UAL system you don't KNOW you have the seat until the airplane pushes. I still believe Delta's system is better. Once you have the seat, you can relax.

Agree, there is so much wrong with the current non-rev system for employees that it's turned into a joke since the merger. The new United system, which is basically the old CAL system - sucks. The new management(old cal) refuses to accept any employee input on the non-rev issue. CAL treated it as a rewards program - UAL treated it as a benefit/privilege.
Plus this "vacation pass" where junior people get to bump senior ones.... They should just call it a "Screw the senior employee pass"
What good is seniority anyway....

Pass travel is much worse. I have been boarded in the back of coach on a pass with economy plus seats open. I'm #2, get my seat, then see the rest of the Space A's who were behind me on the list getting the economy plus because they just went from "back to front". One time I called them and said "Aren't there any exit row seats..." and then she changed my seat.

I complained about this very thing and was told they were in the process of modifying the seat assignment software. It's been a while but, supposedly, the computer is supposed to assign "better" seats in seniority order (ie EP, exit row, window, aisle, THEN middle).
