Maybe that other certain airline didn't need to leverage itself any more.

Ah, your correct there, maybe they were saving to put GPS in your planes

IMHO, this merger was a forgone conclusion the day DAL/NWA was announced and both airlines were quite active in pursuing the merger for similar reasons.

It was not a hostile takeover.
Agree 100% with you there.

If UAL had to remove aircraft in order to be allowed to merge then the argument that CAL had no options and that United pilot career expectations were equal to Continental pilots is moot.

It seems that UAL had to remove aircraft whether it merged with CAL or USAir thus making it hard to fight for the career expectations of many of UAL pilots since it had to lose many airplanes in order to merge and survive. Thus over 1400 pilots had to lose their jobs and career progression for the survival of UAL, making their career expectation nubulous at best.

On the other hand CAL was the right size airline and was not needing to remove any aircraft in order to merge and survive thus guaranteeing the career expectations of its pilots.
It also seems this thread is drifting into yet another tit for tat " mine's bigger/better/newer than yours "... Don't you guys have anything positive to discuss ? Like how can we all contribute to make this outfit a roaring success?
But then I consider my glass half full...

Move along!!!!!
Nothing seems to work out for you guys/keyboard generals. Company management, union management (both MECs, lol) cal pilots, etc., etc. It just sucks for you. There is just such an extreme conspiracy to keep the poor ual guy/gal under the thumb. Sooo unhappy, sooo taken advantage of. It must be absolutely overwhelming. Well good luck and I agree just move along.

Keep you chin up and eyes foward the cal way of life is changing.
Lol. I will always be proud to be a Continental Pilot as well.

Really? So I guess you haven't noticed any changes in the UAL "way of life" as of late? Crawl out of your cave, Smeagol.

I tell people I work for UAL and when I get the inevitable look of derision I quickly add that I'm a former CAL pilot. Happens every time...

So true and then they offer a handshake and thank us for the good job - and that happens every time.

Was cal the only airline that would give you an interview?
We've been over this before, Staller. I had class dates at DAL and CAL. I chose CAL mostly because of the growth potential I saw here, but also in no small part because of the interview process. The CAL interview consisted of a panel of 5 chief pilots and senior check airmen as opposed to the DAL process of a computer test, an HR dude who could barely conceal his boredom and a creepy psychiatrist. I understand our new interview process looks a lot like old Delta's unfortunately.
