Default UAL Pilot Staffing

Interesting site. He uses some publicly available data and generates future UAL pilot staffing. This was from Feb 2012, so I'm not sure if the new contract or new FAA regs fit into this. He claims UAL is understaffed by 600+ pilots. Not sure when that is.

It also uses known aircraft deliveries and retirements.

There is also an interesting seniority calculator. When I put hired in 2013 it said pilots hired this year would hit the 50% overall seniority in just 12 years!

Hi am a pilot in the pool. I looked at this sight when I was trying to decide if this was a good choice (currently a captain at a NY based airline that flies 320 and 190). I found this sight to be helpful. This guy assumes everyone will work until retirement age (historical average and data based on age 60 retirement says that retirements over 15 years will happen in 10). If you assume the no growth numbers a new hire in 2028 would be 30%. If you use historical numbers that would be by 2023. That is unbelievable consider the last 12 years everyone has went through. Hope this decade is better than the last.

Until the next scope give away... or cabotage... or global alliance take over... or natural disaster... or war...

It should be fine.

Well considering in the first year he is off by 12 aircraft and his pilot count suggests an over staff situation of (16.5 x 12) + 161 = 359 but the airline is hiring, I would say this individua'ls work is more than worthless.

Where are the pilots going to come from to fly the RJs?

That's a real potential problem for the industry, and potentially good for us.

The guy that prepared that report and maintains that website is a SkyWest pilot. He is very intelligent. So intelligent that I wonder *** he's doing flying airplanes.

Without new RJ pilots, some of that flying will shift to mainline- AA just announced CRP, GDL and LBB shifting from Eagle back to MD-80s- and some will just disappear.

I agree it's potentially very good news

He is also suggesting that airline is under stuffed by 667; we already hired over 550 pilots since last year and will be hiring 48 a month.
His fleet numbers are off, 757-200, 737-900 and A350s
As always, the only constant in airline business is change.
