I'm mid-November... I am going to be pushing it if I go too far into June. Let's hope that CVs prediction that April will see an increase in poolies entering Indoc holds true...

Anyone know if the new hire training paused/stopped last summer in order for the instructors to go back to the line for summer flying?

Anyone in the training center heard if summer flying will pause/stop inital training classes THIS summer? If so when does the "pause/stoppage" usually start?

I ask because the math is adding up to show anyone interviewed after mid-Oct will not look to go to training until May (based on the poolie email) and I "assume" that is when the "summer pause" would begin so.......it will be after the "summer pause" if there is one for late Oct, Nov and Dec interviews....translates end of Aug or Sept training before late Oct interviews would see training.

Not sure about the CAL side but the UAL side the PIs don't fly line trips other than their normal 2 or 3 days a month that they displace, so DENTK will be open.

Historically we hire and train all summer.

I think the CAL model was different.

No idea what they will do to be honest but we need bodies and I'd be shocked if we stopped hiring this summer.

It was often the case at CAL that this very scenario would occur. We were always short captains in the summer and would pull them out of the training center to fly for 2 months. It was a very different model as far as vacancy bidding was concerned so they had a lot more time to get folks trained.

That system is gone so I would not expect that to happen this summer. They will just continue to throw money at the pilots to fly extra.

Thanks for the explanation. I wasn't sure which methodology would survive, but with a steady stream of retirements, I can't see how we can stop training or hiring for a couple months.

Current process, as I understand it is:
To be selected for indoc class
---Rank the SSN from lowest to highest for each week.
After in class
---Rank order from oldest to youngest by DOB.

Simply put, training capacity on the 737 is currently a constraint and UAL is short 737 CAs. Therefore, some of the previously allocated new-hire training slots will be used for upgrades in the next two months and then UAL will return to full throttle new-hire training.

There are additional simulators coming on line that will help alleviate the issues on the 737 but they are not here yet. The 737 is both a growing fleet with all the deliveries and is also subject to movement as pilots bid larger equipment. As long as retirements continue the 737 fleet will be busy training pilots.

Meanwhile, expect to see a higher % of new-hires being assigned other aircraft, particularly the 76T, as a result of the 737 issues and unfilled vacancies.

(all the above is the school house rumor-du-jour)

Any update to this "school house rumor", wonding if new hire trainin will return to "full throttle" in April? May? June? ever????....
