It's not about ego stroking or making pilots feel superior or anything like that. It is about creating a culture that WE are a special organization to be a part of. It's about wearing the name on your uniform with pride because you represent not just yourself but a lot of great people on your team because feel it's a special place to be and that others should want to be on your team as well. It's not about things, it's about a mentality and a culture that others want to replicate. I'm not talking about bending over for "management" either, there are many ways to increase QOL without touching pay/compensation and I believe building a winning culture is one way to do that. A lot of this can be accomplished by us, the pilots, without any concessions to the management. It's a lot easier to be away from family when you are working with people that want to work with you.
Just my 2 cents after reading a lot of angry, frustrated, and unhappy posts over the last 6 months (some of them very understandable). Also, I like run-on sentences that go on forever with incorrect punctuation that replicates how I talk because I talk Kentucky,

While I haven't had the chance of having my name come up on the interview jackpot, one day I hope it does, and that I have the opportunity to join the United family. And I think it is just that...a family. While you may have those that act that teenagers and roll their eyes at the idea, the majority are proud to be a part of that family. By having these traditions of dinners or wing ceremonies, you have a way of welcoming people to the family and creating a sense of unity. And I think we can agree that a united pilot group, is a powerful pilot group. You can't change a family tradition just because there are a few "bad eggs" or people that let it go to their head. So if this new United doesn't have a tradition, make a new one. For someone new coming on property (like myself, hopefully) keep this stuff alive, bring back the old school and screw the people that have their heads so far up their a$$ they have to fart to breath! Just my two cents
