My understanding is that you are only seat locked if you want to make a "lateral" move as far as equipment type. Hypothetically, Lets say you get the 737 in IAH and commute from DEN. You want to bid the 737 in DEN but can't hold it, but you could hold an A-320 spot. That would be a lateral move (since the 737 and A-320 are in the same group) and wouldn't be allowed for two years. This is my understanding, but current UAL pilots please chime in if I'm incorrect.

That essentially correct. BUT...be very careful using the word "lateral" as that is a L-UAL colloquialism and now codified in the UPA (8-D-2-a) as a term to define a move on the same equipment from one base to another that does not involve an additional freeze.

You'll hear guys say, "I was in DEN on the 320 but took the lateral to ORD."----which simply means they changed bases without an additional freeze.

And it is also correct that there is an initial two year equipment freeze but there is also an exception if you move to a higher numbered aircraft in the table.
1) 321/320/319FO, 737FO
2) 767/757FO
3) 747FO, 777FO, 787FO, 350FO
4) 321/320/319CA, 737CA
5) 767/757CA
6) 747CA, 777CA, 787CA, 350CA
Example: a pilot is trained on the 737 as a new hire but that person could bid, and be awarded, the 757/767 six months later if they can hold it. But that same pilot could not go from the 757 to the 737 until his/her freeze is expired. Or from the 320 to the 737.

Including the class on the 8th, there are currently nine remaining classes scheduled this year as the holidays are an obstruction later in the year.
Cadet can you possibly expand on how the remaining 9 classes for the year are distributed? Is it simply one per week starting next week to the week prior to T-giving and then none through December or are they spread out to an extent that will have a class or two staring in Dec?
Of particular interest to me since my availability is essentially Dec 1

Great info, thanks! I was wondering if you could bid up from the 737 to the 757 within the two years. So it looks like that should be no problem. Some new hire classes are only 737, while some have both 73 & 75.

For Wilt:

Class date options for the rest of 2013 for recallees at least (Other openings to be filled by poolies I presume) and at about 12 spots per class date and only 33 accepting recall so far...
10/8/2013
 10/15/2013
 10/29/2013
 11/5/2013
 11/12/2013
 11/16/2013
 12/3/2013
 12/10/2013
 12/27/2013

Maybe.

Don't forget that UCH is planning to park ~70 757s in the next two years.

So if the classes are not filled for 10/8 or 10/15 calls could start this week to poolies?

Presumably, yes. (Assuming that UAL wants the classes filled)

And considering that the pilot hiring department traditionally attempts to give more than two weeks notice I would not be surprised to see multiple classes filled quickly.

Thanks for that insight. So unless all 33+ recallees are eyballing December class dates, I suppose there's a chance I may see a class before the year is out. Guess ill know before too long. Cheers!
