Think pilots with military commitments or others with overseas flying contract obligations.

Apply ASAP as soon as you meet the minimums and keep updating.
BUT....also be realistic and realize that this is the beginning of the hiring cycle and UAL can, and will, be very selective. Those called so far generally have qualifications far beyond the minimums.
One internal recommendation can be enough if it's from the right person and gets into the hands of the other right people, but generally more is better. Also recommendations all don't have to be internal. Strong letters from your fellow crew members and supervisors can also add weight to your application.

I think the pool is around 60+.. They have been interviewing 20+ since the first week of Aug. So if you consider this would be the 5 week of interviews this week and a majory are hired.

I have a question. I am a recent addition to the pool, and had 10/15/2013 as my date available on my application when I interviewed. Something just came up, and I am not going to be available until 12/10/2013 or so. If I really fight, I could get out of it, but wondering what you guys think. Should I contact Charlie directly, or just change my application online? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

That's 120 seniority numbers. It may not seem like much compared to ~12,000 pilots but it will matter every month for the rest of your career. It might someday even be the difference between a furlough or employment even if you think you are safe with >1000 pilots below you. It could make a difference of several hundred pilots on the list after the next merger.
Take the very first new-hire class you can get into.
