Go no matter what, even if you have to drag yourself. First week is indoc sitting in a chair, next two weeks is doing computerized systems instruction. But most importantly is you get an employee number and thereby your place on the seniority list which can make a huge difference in your life in the next economic downturn. Many of us have been there and one class can make the difference between going to Guam or not, or having a job or not, and a lot of other issues throughout your career.

Exactly the reasons I considered delaying the surgery... But it's going to be a two week delay, as opposed to taking 2-3 months of medical leave some other time. Decided to do it now instead of waiting. I know the risks that come along with delaying, but had to consider future impact not only on Life at United but at the Guard as well... Luckily it's turning out to be two weeks and not 4-5 weeks as originally predicted.

I agree with the above posting. Take the best medical advice you can get and be very forthcoming with UAL. They will work with you. But yes you can expect not having to touch a sim for the first four weeks. The Flight training device has rudders but you do not practice engine out work until the full motion sim which is in the last 1/3 of training.

I had a strangely similar situation. Broke my foot a few weeks before training. Asked dr if the cast could come off early and he said yes if I wore a removeable cast/boot. I wore this until I started training at which point I switched to a high-ankle work boot. It simply looked like a style choice and no one was the wiser. Lots of folks wear boots in Texas.

Thank you. A very good thing to consider. I'm planning on July 22nd for Indoc... Which will be almost 9 weeks post-surgery. I'm guessing another 3-4 weeks or so before I get in to the sim to do V1 cuts. Indoc=2 weeks. Then systems and procedures stuff and then sims. Hoping I'm right on this... Should leave more than enough time. Someone please correct me if my timeline is incorrect.
