When I interviewed they asked me point blank what type of prep I had done. When I told her, "nothing prepared or paid for, I figured you wanted to know who I was as opposed to who CC told me to pretend to be" she smiled and said "thank you!" It seemed genuine and sincere.

I know plenty of guys who got through without it, and plenty who got shot down with it. YRMV.
ANYONE ON THIS FORUM WHO IS CONSIDERING GOING INTO A UNITED INTERVIEW "COLD" (no interview prep) IS OUT OF THEIR FRIGGING MIND!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a current United guy who went 5 for 5 with interviews (I ain't too bright neither!)...who did interview prep (with a former UAL interview Capt no-less) and would do it ALL over again for 10x the price! I was able to ANTICIPATE the PURPOSE of their questions, before they finished asking them. TWICE I was able to ID HR toads leading me to hang myself with a line of questioning, only to turn their own words into a home-run for MY interview and jack their deceptive crap questions out of the park.

Gamble a $5+ MILLION career by going lone wolf? YGBSM! Do EVERYTHING you can to prep for the big day, dry run with a pro, write everything down, rehearse as MUCH as you can recalling YOUR "TMAAT..." situations (doesn't have to be "canned", just learn how to comfortably deliver YOUR answer without stepping on your shwantz) own the interview by using YOUR experiences to illustrate your life and experiences and go get your job!

I'm astonished that ANYONE would consider doing ANY less!

Be VERY weary of taking "advice" provided on these forums...some of it really SUCKS!!

Just my 2 cents

Cheers,
Horhay

One other option under affiliates...

"Unemployed by virtue of layoff/shutdown from ALPA-represented carrier"

I'm furloughed Comair, but I have a job now. Can I check this box, or do I need to quit my current job first?

Were you unemployed by virtue of layoff/shutdown from alpa-rep carrier? There's your answer. Imho.

That is similar to those who lost their jobs as a result of the deregulation act and were subsequently offered preferential hiring.

Wow, you're assuming $150K average for 33 years or $200K for 25 years - Good luck captain

Yes, I became an unemployed ALPA pilot the day Comair closed.

So it shouldn't matter if I'm delivering pizzas, flying C-130s, or flying at another regional - I'm still considered an unemployed ALPA Pilot?

Believe me, I would love to check that box... but not if it means having to defend why I didn't just sit at home, collecting welfare, waiting for the Majors to call.

It's really an individual choice. I went in completely cold. Still got the job. But I have a unique set of skills where that worked out well for me. Some people will, without a doubt, need it. But not everyone needs it, and certainly that doesn't make us out of our minds.

You are right in general though. Why take chances? For the most part, I would say that the majority of people would be better off with the prep.

On the other point, yeah, you have to know what you are looking at to decide whether or not the information is worthwhile, just like your inbox or the internet in general.

Look at the pay tables bro...nominally, a 3rd year NB FO pay plus B fund contribution is over $120k. I can tell you my check as a "4th year" guy will be a HELLUVA lot bigger than that. NB capt earns a MIN of $200k...this doesn't include ANY incremental pay increases over the next 4 years. Add another 30% + for these raises and I'd submit the career value would be in the 7/8 million range or more...quite easily...even as a widebody FO no less, no upgrade required !

Cheers

Horhay, with all due respect (and I said with all due respect), you must be on crack if you think you can extrapolate those rates into perpetuity and claim $7/8M career as FO. Were you not paying attention to the industry in the last 15 years? 25 years? 35 years?

Also, do you think 30% over the next 4 years is sustainable?

Looking at the current payscale and projecting 30 years out is like looking at the last 6months of stock market return and planning your retirement based on that. As much as you'd like to think that rates will only keep going up, all evidence point to a cyclical trend in employee compensation, with bankruptcies to knock rates down to reasonable levels every decade or so.

For a more reasonable forecast, take the last 15 year's average wages and grow them at long-term GDP growth. This would still be optimistic as it would assume UAL's domestic and int'l market share stays constant, and the overall US airline share of worldwide traffic stays constant...both of which are VERY optimistic projections

Ask the guys that got hired under mid-term ESOP or contract 2000 how bright and financially lucrative their futures looked.

Just sayin', careful on buying the bigger house, the bigger boat, another sports car, getting another girlfriend, etc etc etc
