But from a simple point of view, if you were at 50% of the line holders where there were 100 lines which contained 600 total trips, and you have one of two choices...
1) Pick from one of 50 remaining company pre-build lines....
2) Pick any 6 trips from 300 remaining open trips....
Which would you choose?
The argument whether PBS is better than company built lines is a moot point, because we don't have company built lines, and PBS is a far better matching system than company built lines, which take NO pilot preferencing into account.
If you liked company built lines, its because it was clear and you could understand WHY you got a certain line (it was the highest left that you picked).
If you don't like PBS, its because you don't understand either how to bid, or why you got what you got.

I use it too and anybody with a rudimentary familiarization of boolean logic and half a brain will do just fine with it...that, and a clear understanding of what your relative seniority can hold.
Eight years after implementation, staffing issues notwithstanding, there are still a few individuals trying to bid SAN turns out of Houston at 70% BES with no fallback bid groups...guess what happens? Hiring qualities have declined dramatically over the last 35 years.

I bid a few days off for Feb, nothing spectacular, I bid award OGG H++. 5 trips were in my trip pool. 2 went to senior bidders. The other 3 went into open time. I was awarded 14 days off straight in the middle of the month that I didn't ask for. I filed a dispute which I lost cause my line value would have dropped too low. I asked for 3-4 day trips, commutable. The system will honor your avoid, and do whatever it feels like with award.
I also flew with the number 1 CA in the entire Lcal company. He got screwed by PBS over and over again. Although I don't think he has invested as much time into it.
The system is flawed, complex, and MGT has too much control. They want a cheaper solution, more people get less days off.
Good luck with it

If you are junior, you are left with what's left over regardless of PBS or company built lines. If you don't understand it you will also probably not like it. We have the same complaints on our side. I was lucky to be very involved in the PBS training so I understand it very well.
There needs to be some pilot to pilot training once we are all on the new system.

Same with the company built lines. Once the top 10% bid, they took all the "good lines" and the rest was slop.

Easy Squirt. Your mild rant still doesn't mitigate the fact that an individual still needs to know what's attainable at his or her relative seniority in order to have consistent success with bid awards. That applies through the entire BES.

It is not guaranteed with the ual system either by 50% it does not just award the next person what they wany it also looks at people junior to yourself. Good bad or otherwise that is how it works, have had that explained to me too many times.
