787 training has been cancelled UFN and the most recent class has been sent back to previous equip. There is some talk of those who have been qualified on it returning to prior equipment. I don't see how they could do that without another system bid, but it's still a CAL process so indecision will prevail until it's too late and pilots will be the last to know what's going on.

The thing is they don't even know what happened yet. These batteries are exceptionally volatile when they fail. They don't need oxy to burn, and really can't be put out once ignited. They simply have to be contained.

As an aside, I have a side business where we use lithium batts extensively. Both Li-ion, and lipo and we treat them like a ticking time bomb. Charged and stored in a firesafe container, and never charge in the model. They really are incredibly high energy, while also being incredibly volatile if damaged or abused.

I'm wondering if the battery is just a symptom, and if there is an issue with the electrical system. The UA flight IAH-EWR that diverted to MSY was down to stby power (I think).

I'm not sure they are "waiting" for anything. When they announced that huge 737-900ER replacement order last summer/fall, didn't the company state then that these deliveries would be for the second half of 2013? So if the -900ER is replacing the older UAL 752s and they are expected to start arriving after June 2013, it then follows this is when the 752s will start exiting the fleet. At least that is the way I read the original press announcement. This really should come as no surprise.

As a side note, I laughed when I saw the title of this thread. Based on what I've seen so far "UAL" (i.e. UCH really) and "plan" have no place in the same sentence.

Not sure if this has already been answered, but the answer is; they don't have to. Contractually the maximum UAX block hour ratio is 120% to mainline narrowbody block hours. Before this JCBA was ratified the actual uax block hour ratio was somewhere south of that. For instance I remember hearing it was 112%. So technically they can add 8% more UAX flying. A reduction in UAX flying will occur when or "if" UA decides to get more Big RJs or Qs.

You are correct. However, without the SLI, there is no way to train surplused 757 pilots from sUAL on the new 737s. We have no training program for the NG. No instructors. UCH will be in a world of hurt if we don't have a list when the 757s go out to pasture. Our side is still asking for LOAs. It would be like after 9-11 when some of us just went home for 8 months with pay after UAL decided to park 2 fleets all of a sudden.

The company does not have to shrink regional airframes. They are, however, obligated to ratio block hour with mainline narrowbody airframes. I think that you will see the rj fleet count grow while the mainline fleet count shrinks due to the fact that uch is the primary lease holder on most of the 50 seat airframes and will probably want to spread the flying around in in order max out their lifespan before the next major maintenance cycle. In other words, instead of parking a good airframe, they can use it to help extend the life of other airfeames.

Rumors from higher up in ALPA safety is that we might be looking at at least a year down time.
Also heard the same on the canx B787 training classes.

I thought there was a 125 airframe Cap on 50 seaters? On the Jumpseat the Cal guys said it basically mirrored delta scope.
