Will the Halfwinger tradition remain?

I personally didn't like wearing the Alpa 1/2 wing, it was cool to never pay for any food at the airport and free beer on the layover during the first year, we can still carry that tradition on!
(It was also fun to see the old 727 Capt's try to weasel out on buying beer, food, etc....some guys were just cheap)
I also didn't like the FAT OLD HAG F/A's..."your just a 1/2 winger...what do you know?" comments. In other words you were fair game for other employee groups to haze you as a 1/2 winger.
I will never let ANY newhire buy a beer or any food on a layover, and that is the TRADITION that should carry on.
My 20 year pin is inverted....and that is mostly for the shameful T/A and LOA-25 agreement. ALPA has really sucked lately.

I thought there was a stark contrast between the two. At United our wives were invited to attend the first day, a nice dinner and join us at the Jeppesen statue at the airport where they gave us our wings in a velvet jewelry case and took a photo. At CAL they were literally tossed on the desk in front of us, no hand shake no nothing. United also had a tradition of captains mentoring new hire pilots and protecting them while on probation when the company could terminate them without cause. Just look at the wings, United reflects the history of the airline and the 4 original airlines that formed to make the company, at CAL they slapped a set of wings on the logo. It is a totally different culture, I hope the United traditions continue.
I am disappointed the prop is now gone from the UAL wings and hat device.....

You know I sort of agree with the general nostalgic sentiment of this thread. I know ya'll's hearts are in the right place, but it's not going to work. Attempting to preserve or cling to traditions at either of our former legacy employers will only raise the hurdles we're already tripping on. That goes far beyond how ALPA wings were revered, deep into our daily responsibilities and subtleties of every aspect of cockpit procedures and ultimately customer service. Maybe the better thing to do is redefine EVERYTHING? I am thinking that maybe just maybe the right in house union would be the answer?

When the next wave of regional pilots come to UAL with 10,000+ hours of turbojet time, as check airmen and ALPA committee chair and status rep experience and ALPA 10, 15 and 20 year pins... they are the intel and experience.........
The Blue Angel guy probably did need to learn that duty, honor, country has no place in a for profit multi-national corporation that views pilot labor as a cost to be controlled...
What about first year pay?
