CAL-MEC Strike Authorization Ballot
#41
It is time to draw the line, vote to strike. But be just be aware that UA ALPA has a history of not telling the whole truth and not honoring promises made. It happened to the 570 back in 1985 with "we wont go back to work without you" promise, to allowing pilots who crossed in 85 but didnt "turn a wheel" ALPA membership. It happened with the ESOP, post bankruptcy stock allocation and bond issue. Be prepared. Prepare your family especially. Striking is not fun, in fact it sucks, one of the worst things I have ever gone through. You thought bankruptcy was bad, wait until the 3rd week of a strike when no paycheck is coming, you see friends crossing the line and your wife says "OK tuff guy how are we going to pay the mortgage and feed the family". That is when you see cracks in the unity. You see friends cross and United planes flying. WE wont shut United down totally with the ability to transfer pax to USAir, regional partners, and STAR partners. With the scabs already at United from 85 and Continental from 83 some of United planes will be flying from the beginning of the strike. Vote yes, but just realize what you are empowering the MEC with and be ready, ready to walk away. You may never come back. Are you ready for that.
3rd week with no paycheck coming?
I've survived over 300 weeks of no UAL paycheck coming.
That supposed to be scary?

Apparently, you have a problem or an issue with what I stated or the way it was stated. For this I apologize. Im not saying we saved anything or anybody, but I know we were given assurances and told things by both sides that were never true or never honored.
My point is if you have never been through a strike prepare yourself and your family for the worst possible outcome. Anticipate that you will not be returning to United. Expect propaganda from both sides. Politics and power plays will being happening everyday and there are huge ups and downs. Just giving a perspective from someone who has been there and been fired for it.
Thanks for jumping on my case, though.

You know I had written a very long response to your post, but just deleted it. The intended purposes of which was "education" for the less tenured. Their minds are already made up too however. Why should they listen to either you or me at this point? It's too late to change anyone's mind on how they view pilot relations with UCH nor the history of the 570, ALPA's adulation of Tim Martins, CAL's scabs, fleet qualed UAL scabs, Cal's "crawl backs", the New York air pilots, the JFK shootings, etc...
Instead:
May the association make decisions that we all view as sound. May unity be higher than it ever has been. May we secure an industry leading contract. I know where I will be.
Sincere apology for my ill will on your first post and welcome to the APC forums. Good luck to you and yours.

Thx Captain Bligh, and you are right. It is too late to change minds about the past, and most pilots on the property don't really care what happened in 83 or 85. Nor should they. But if we are going to vote to strike, we had better be prepared to truly strike and go in eyes wide open. I have seen pilots pound their chests and be ready to "burn this place down", then cross the next day. Striking can get real ugly, real fast. In more ways than you think. Been there, done that. It sucks. I am voting YES.
Best of luck to you as well!

I apologize for being insensitive to pilots who are not on the property anymore. Hopefully with a well planned and executed strike, one that pilots are prepared for, we can improve the contract and you will have the option to come back. Maybe you won't want to. You think UAL sucks now, wait until post strike. Whole different ball game.
