Jumpseat and Listing

There is no confusion based on the answer I gave the guy. I was quite clear that as an offline pilot there is no other way to list for the jumpseat than to go to the gate...period. L-CAL and now L-UAL pilots have the ability to do this ahead of time, but that does not mean they have to as the agent can create this listing as well. For commuting purposes it has just always been helpful to be able to see who is listed ahead of time.
This isn't a CAL vs. UAL holdover thing at all. It's just another tool made available for all of us to use. Use it if you want or don't use it as the case may be.

In the same way that listening to the recent CAL MEC town hall meeting and the pedestrian questions my fellow pilots asked raised my blood pressure, I shake my head in disbelief that there are still pilots in the ranks that think this whole jumpseat access mess is somehow due to a lack of training, misunderstanding of proceedure, or some other omission, rather than intentionally designed to take away any authority pilots might have thought they had concerning the boarding process or access to transportation.

I disagree. It gives you a heads-up of a more senior Pilot who will be using the J/S so that you can make other plans for your commute to and from work. Has worked well over here for years and I like it.

I agree, I don't commute but just used passes with jumpseat as a backup and I liked the system. The agents sure appreciated that I had listed for both.

I know you think you've got a diamond, but listing for JS can be more harmful than any benefit you can come up with. Senior guys will likely not list. Would you really go a day early or do a 3 leg commute because somebody senior listed for a jump seat. If you're that job scared, keep this in mind - Listing for a JS or pax seat can/has been/will be used by the company to determine if you did the prudent thing in your commute. I won't list because it is a bad procedure(no benefit). Hopefully it will be done away with during or after JCBA.

The company can see you used a J/S anytime they want whether you pre-listed or list at the gate, (see computerized CASS and internal J/S software), so that discounts your theory on being punished. As far as listing immediately prior to the flight you can still list for the J/S at the gate anytime so why the heartburn?

Why would it be harmful? Makes life easier on the gate agents and again, gives me a heads up on who's traveling. Win-win in my book. Around 99% of the Pilots at CAL have used it for years and found it quite beneficial. Maybe at first the senior UAL types won't use it but after a little peer pressure from the middle to junior folks who want to know their options when commuting, perhaps they will.

If you walk up to the gate and see you are not going to get the JS or a seat in the back, you walk away. There is no record of you showing up for anything. Seeing this could make you sick and leaving you with only one option. Peer pressure from a CAL guy is not going to change my mind - I will never list for the JS.
Love your "Peer pressure from some CAL guy" comment though.
