Default Then why are we getting iPads now?

This is a serious question. The following is from the March 2012 iPad update news letter (red text from the original; all other emphasis added by me):

Each pilot will be issued an, Apple iPad 2 (16 GB Wi-Fi) and a protective case. During the first phase of deployment, our goal for the device is limited to replacing our paper flight manuals, specifically the FOM, FM, and WOM. During this period, the iPad must be properly stowed during all critical phases of flight below 10,000 ft. Therefore, we must maintain our paper manuals until the FAA lifts this 10,000 ft. restriction. Flight Operations is actively engaged with the FAA to receive the necessary authorization. When this occurs, we will expand usage to all phases of flight and remove the paper manuals. Currently we anticipate accomplishing this later in 2012.
So based on this, we are getting iPads now but we still have to keep all paper manuals, not just the Jepps. Something else to carry around with no reduction in anything else. You know this is all well and good for the L-UAL side who have ship sets. Why are we issuing these things before we get that FAA approval to actually eliminate the paper versions of these manuals and use the iPad below 10,000 feet?

Will it be a requirement that we have to pick up the iPad or even carry it? If not, I prefer to wait until the FAA signs off on actually being able to use the thing as intended before I get one from the CPO.

At sUA, many of us are thinking the same thing. I won't be picking one up until they make it mandatory. Frankly, it is an almost useless device as currently configured. At some point, it might be useful if they get their crap into a big pile instead of this shotgun approach to its development. Pretty sad that we can't even have a presentation that the GA guys have mostly perfected on the same platform. Good ole UCH IT!

I hope they have a lot of ipad SME's on hand for the days leading up to the mandatory carry date. There are many pilots who don't want the financial responsibility for a useless brick, let alone the privacy issues.

On the other hand, a pilot the other day was giddy at the prospect of getting his new ipad. I explained my position and it was like talking to a 6 year old at 5am on Dec 25th.

I can't carry it until at least one manual is gone from my the flight kit.

OTOH, there are a lot of folks who don't know what a touch screen is and don't want to learn. My questions are not when can the iPad replace the manual completely, but when will it be mandatory to carry it and when will they stop updating the hard copies of the manuals. When that day comes, there will be guys without a paper FOM fumbling around with an iPad for the first time trying to find the on/off switch.

I also have zero desire in getting one.

One pilot I spoke with the other day was upset by the fact that in present form, he could not add his favorite apps to the ipad. I told him there are anecdotal stories of pilots upgrading the OS system via itunes. They are then able to configure it to their desires. That put a smile on his face. Some will never learn.

There is no privacy issue. It's company property. Yes the company has the right to look at what's on there. So NOTHING personal on it, period. It'll be OFF at home.

You want an iPad to check you stocks and surf the web? Buy YOUR OWN. I did.

Maybe I just have common sense but privacy issues aren't even on my radar.

#1 The company already knows where I live.
#2 The company knows what trips I am on.
#3 The company knows which hotels I am staying in.

So I take my iPad from my home, to work for my trips and to the hotels. They already know this anyway. Not like I am going to be taking this thing to the bar or some strip club and turn the thing on.

In addition, why would anyone be doing personal, non-work related activities on the company-issued iPad anyway? Doesn't make sense. Sure, do your work email on it (I guess UAL guys currently have e-mail via the company) but any personal email accounts I certainly wouldn't be accessing on it.

Maybe you just haven't been to federal court and heard testimony regarding video surveillance of pilots in flight ops, or of every key stroke union leaders made on company computers and web sites or posts made by pilots on password protected pilot forums.

I think your idea of "common sense" might change a little bit if you had experienced some of these things.

They don't know. I'm surprised when they have tried to call me to check in for a trip starting tomorrow, when I'm still in the air flying today's trip. They've also called me at layovers looking for me to show up at another airport on the other side of the country. "You didn't know I'm in SFO?" This company's right hand doesn't know what it's left hand is doing. I'm not afraid of them tracking me with my iPad. The black United helicopter over my house is a different matter.
