I think your idea of "common sense" might change a little bit if you had experienced some of these things.

If union leaders are doing union business on company computers then they are idiots, but I think that's already been established.

Computers, iPads are company property. Crew lounges are company property. They can pretty much do what they want. My Pad will be shut off on the employee bus and put in the closet when I get home.

I've flown with a couple of companies when out on furlough using tablets, you will love them. Quick search whatever subject you have a question about. Every manual available. Pull up a chart and expand it ( for the over 40 club). And it saves the company big money. Which puts more in the pot for us to negotiate for and keeps us employees. And no more stupid flight bags.

It's a good thing.

This company's right hand doesn't know what it's left hand is doing. I'm not afraid of them tracking me with my iPad. The black United helicopter over my house is a different matter.
You've noticed that black helicopter too? Personally, I don't want anything to do with the company's IPad. Just one more thing to carry and I'll still need to carry my own laptop or Ipad for personal email and union work.

So based on this, we are getting iPads now but we still have to keep all paper manuals, not just the Jepps. Something else to carry around with no reduction in anything else. You know this is all well and good for the L-UAL side who have ship sets. Why are we issuing these things before we get that FAA approval to actually eliminate the paper versions of these manuals and use the iPad below 10,000 feet?

Will it be a requirement that we have to pick up the iPad or even carry it? If not, I prefer to wait until the FAA signs off on actually being able to use the thing as intended before I get one from the CPO.
All part of the FAA process. Have to carry paper until it is proven they are reliable and workable with United. If you really get bored, or need something to put you to sleep, you can google "FSIMS 8900.1" and look at-
Volume 4 Aircraft equipment and operational authorizations
Chapter 15 electronic flight bag authorization for use
Section 1 Electronic Flight Bag Operational Authorization Process

ENJOY!!!

Default I-Pad user guide for senior pilots

For the non-German speaking friends - the dialog is as follows:

She: Say Dad, how are you getting along with the iPad we gave you for your birthday?

He: Fine.

She: You mean you are OK with all the apps?

He: What apps?

The rest is self-explanatory…

Then the question becomes:

Are those pilots on the seniority list or are they outsourcing those, too?
