My point being that:
1. We have been dealing with our management team for years now and they have a history of running this airline severely understaffed at times. As our illustrious former EWR CP once said, "You don't see the church building a bigger parking lot just because it's Christmas." That is the mentality that runs through the ranks of flight operations for the most part. They'll somehow make it work out with the current staffing...if not they'll just go to the press and blame the pilots for a job action.
2. Again, not knowing the how the open position staffing works over there (and having yet to hear of recalls to your side) and referencing #1, I'd say that not furloughing does have value all things being equal.
3. Flight hour/ratio protections also play a factor here as even if your side doesn't grow the need for bodies during attrition is protected. I'd say that has value, too. It has value to the pilots on furlough who could be recalled and start earning money again.

But to answer your question, why don't you go ask the bottom 100-200 guys on the LUAL seniority list?
I'll use easy math: Lets say those pilots make $100,000 per year. Do you think their salary has "value" to them when they're furloughed?
On the company side: They pay $100,000 salary, benefits, training costs, etc... What's the value to company of lopping off the bottom 100 guys? (don't tell me they won't, ask the 147 guys that were furloughed from LCAL for no reason)
Since they furloughed the bottom 100-200 they won't be needing the older 757's which are tagged for removal anyway. Block hour protection? The junior Captains are now pushed back to right seat... what value does that have to them?
"So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself."

The UALMEC has made a critical error in not knowing their enemy, the new UAL flight ops is run by LCAL managers. The game has changed, time to retool and rethink.
Cue DEX to blame JP...

At this point a no furlough clause is useless. The time to have it would have been about 5 years ago. And really, if they really want to furlough they will find a way around it as they have in the past. "Circumstances beyond our control...."

The only mistake the UAL MEC made was giving your MEC a chance to prove that a SCAB MENTALITY didn't exist at CAL today. You failed and PIERCE failed for not leading CAL pilots away from the companies offer. If you think this is a win for the CAL pilots, you are SADLY mistaken.
Who said anything about a win? Come on Dex, stay on track. As Garry said, look internal at your own LEC reps, you just might be surprised.

I do what I can with guys like you - tolerate! We really don't have much to have a rational discussion. You guys should be happy. Management gave you a bonus. Sad thing is you can't enjoy it. All your friends, neighbors and family know what you did to got it - that will never change. Even when you look in the mirror - you'll know! Just like the CAL guys from the early 80's. What kind of life have they had. Ask them, they'd like to have to have someone to talk to. That life is now becoming yours!
